Go to various shops in your area and try on shoes. Buy the ones that are the most comfortable.

That really depends on what you want to do with them and what your demands are. If you want to walk a bit in them to stop in a coffeeshop or whatever, than go for spd's. If not, than you can go for the classic 3-bolt systems like look, spd sl,... If you want a lot of float and to be able to clip in at both sides, than go with speedplay (these are not cheap). So a bit of extra info on what you plan on doing would be handy

I got Shimano R087 ($55.95 at Jenson) shoes and R540 (32.99 at nashbar , free shipping today orders over $50) pedals over a year ago. Couldn't be happier for my entry into clipless:
Shimano R087 Road Shoes > Apparel > Shoes and Footwear > Road Cycling Shoes | Jenson USA
Nashbar - Welcome!
Actually bought a second pair of pedals for my other bike which means I also have a replacement set of cleats which I haven't needed to use yet. I'm sure I will upgrade the pedals due to weight weenism way before they ever wear out. And I could imagine getting another year out of the shoes

I like SPD cleats best because there are so many shoes available that take them, many of them walkable. They are easy to get in and out of.

The shoe is one of the most important pieces of equipment you can have. It all begins at your feet. If you get some soft plastic, flexi shoe...it'll suck. Don't cheap out on shoes.
Get the best shoes you can afford.
As for pedals...the Speedplay Light Action are fairly easy to use. You can clip in from either side.
