And so it begins....Vancouver to San Diego, or Bust.

@scozim, your brother-in-law's place is incredible. I bet he can a story.
Looking forward to following your odyssey.

Will - I'm definitely living vicariously through you and this thread. An extended bike trip is a definite goal of mine.

UGH, Firefox on my netbook just crashed and lost my Granville Is. ride entries 2 hours down the drain. :-(
Throwing in the towel for the morning, must get ready to meet Tim for some single track. Try again tonight.

Thank you for this. Fun seeing Vancouver and a bit of Victoria. It's been a very long time since I was at either. The HOUSE... Amazing. I can just about imagine our building inspector looking it over.
Crossing borders can be fun, or at least interesting! Glad it all worked out.

Vancouver, Day 4 continued:
Since our meet up was at 12pm, that gave me some time to capture some of the urban life along the end of False Creek.
Converted 2010 Olympic games housing campus, now condos.

We arrived at one the entrances into Granville Island. Use to be a old commercial district, and many of the old galvanized steel buildings have been refurbed and re-used. An art college is on the island, and is a haven for the art community. A popular spot with lots to see and do. Very inviting and colorful.
One of the remaining commercial industries on the island, concrete company with cool painted silos.

Take your daughter to work Day! Well, at least when there is a British Columbia teachers strike and schools aren't open.

We had a mission after lunch...to head cross town to see why Sharon's new Cro-moly touring bike wasn't ready for delivery.
We rode to Dream Cycle on Commercial Dr. The vibrant street is known for shops with every eclectic item you are trying to find.
Upon arriving, her new Soma Saga was being assembled with just built wheels They were built and trued by the owner's Quebecois girlfriend. Her cool factor just went past #11 . The bike will be ready to ride next morning.
IMG_8385 by WNG555, on Flickr
IMG_8382 by WNG555, on Flickr
After the bike shop visit, Sharon had to make a stop to see her grandson, and I had to get the perishable groceries back home ASAP.
I had no map, and my cell phone is out of service. With a few "turn left, then right, then another." directions. I simply set off in the right direction and hoped for the best.
As I rode through "Little Saigon", I spotted this unexpected sight! NICE!
IMG_8393 by WNG555, on Flickr
I found my way without trouble.

See if you can spot the unusual detail in this photo I snapped.

The fun day wasn't over. I was to be a last minute guest to a dinner party. I met Sharon's friends, Lance and his companion Desiree. Lance is a business owner from Calgary and flies between Vancouver and Calgary constantly. He's 70, and fit as a fiddle. His companion Desiree is from South Africa, and also his dancing partner. They are Tango instructors as well. The notable inclusion of this mention, is that Lance is a numerologist, and has a published book on the subject.
He analyzed my birthdate, and informed me it's been a bad year. And that physically, it's not the time to exert myself excessively. My body won't respond like in the past. Then I told him I'm riding to San Diego! Hmmmm, oh well!

Part II Vancouver Day 5:
Friday was another blue skied warm day. I stayed an extra day to help get some apps and computer stuff prepared for my host's Euro bike tour, oversee the morning delivery of Sharon's new bike, and to install some accessories. Basically give it a once over check.
Here's the Soma Saga touring bike in the flesh:

With all tasks done, we had the rest of the afternoon to give it a shakedown ride. This time we rode the north side of yesterday's route and head south over one of the bridges across the False Creek.
A view of Granville Island from the northern shore of the False Creek...

I still needed to pack and plan my departure for Victoria early Saturday. And Sharon had a group ride to Bellingham, WA too, and wanted to take her new Soma. We were both buzzing with bike activity that last evening.
Early next day, we exchanged warm goodbyes and wished one another safe journeys as we headed our separate ways. She had a ride to catch, and I, a ferry at the southern town of Tsawwassen.

that is one really long ferry ride from tsawwassen to sydney. the wind and weather in the strait of georgia feel like you're out in the middle of the ocean. it's good to get out on deck and feel it. then go back inside and delve into a good book.

Part III Victoria, BC ...Goodbye Vancouver!
Taking both mikemowbz and my host's advice, I chose to take Vancouver public transit to the ferry terminal. On my map, it looked like a few hours ride, but soon learned there was no direct route accessible. A long detour East is needed.
Off into suburban Vancouver fully loaded in search of the right train station. My first experience riding on an unmanned subway train.

Upon reaching Bridgeport Terminal, I needed to catch a shuttle bus for the ferry terminal. The lines were queuing quite long with weekend travelers. I was sent to the front of the line so that I can load my bike, nice! But then was told the bus only accepts coins, no bills. I was $0.20 shy! No time to remove the bike or find a place to get change...then a kind tourist stepped in and helped make up the difference. He allowed this clueless biker to not miss the bus and the morning ferry. His name is Carlos.
"Obrigado, meu amigo!"
Carlos and his 4 traveling companions are from Brazil and studying in Vancouver for a month.
He's a developer for Microsoft Brazil, and has a masters in genetics.

Enjoying the views on the Sun Deck. As eschlwc stated earlier, it's very windy and cold from the weather across the strait. The other side of the ship was being hit with strong winds, while we all stayed on the port side in the sun and calmness.

We bikers disembark first and the 'peloton' sets off with enthusiam.

I search for the Galloping Goose Bike Trail that will bring me into Victoria. But I found out from Swartz Bay to Saanich, it's the Lochside Regional Trail that's the northern portion. I soon reached Sidney, BC and the trail hugged the shore for some miles.

The trail cuts through farm land on rural gravel roads, very wide and flat, and a pleasant grinding portion. A pumpkin patch...ready for Halloween.

After crossing the wooden Selkirk Trestle, the Galloping Goose Trail ran into a major road construction project and I got detoured onto local streets and was no longer sure where the detour dropped me back. But a resident pointed out Downtown Victoria was just ahead over the Johnston Bridge. I had arrived.

I found my way through Victoria to my accommodations and got myself checked in. Immediately went online to check for messages and got a hold of Victoria forumite, @holden west to make plans for the rest of the day. I had enough time to get refreshed before he arrived to take me to visit a very special bike shop on the other side of the harbor.
It was Trek Bicycles Victoria, one of the new Trek 'factory' stores, but also home of Pro City Racing. holden west (Rob) arrived promptly on his vintage Italian steel Camerotti in bright Ferrari red. Rob is very fast and I do my best to keep pace. It was a short sprint to the shop, and yes, well worth the time to see it. The owner has many C&V road and track bikes on display. According to the employees, there were just too many to display and were in the back. Also championship winning mtbs and road bikes from local pros. A lot of signed memorabilia and jerseys. And the best restroom a roadie could wish for.
Pre WWII Raleigh

The manager then asked me something that came unexpected, "Would you like to try out his bike?" Uhh Sure!
He took down the Cervelo from the display and brought it down for me. How cool is that?!?!?!
The thing is feather light, and I straddled a piece of royal bike history.
I thought requesting if he can lower the seat post, was probably pushing it.

Rob and I set off from the bike shop to a brewery-pub on the north side of Victoria Harbor to get some libation.

As we ate and chatted on the pub's terrace, we watched the CoHo ferry sailing into the harbor from Port Angeles. Rob highlighted the history of the harbor and its activity, and pointed there's the ferry you'll be catching tomorrow!

It was getting late, as the sun was beginning to set. So Rob and I finished up and headed back to our bikes. He would be taking the direct route back to Saanich, and will find my way back to the hostel. I was glad the first part of the day, allowed me to partake in a splendid time that afternoon. Rob, a big thanks for a fun first day in Victoria!
After Rob left, I rode over to the water's edge to take in the Golden Hour light. Looks like the cruise ship has docked successfully.

On my ride into Downtown, I stumbled upon Chinatown, North America's oldest Chinatown, I was told.
IMG_8603 by WNG555, on Flickr
Rob advised me to go ride the coastline in the evening to take in the nocturne scenes around Victoria. So, I headed back to get changed as it does get chilly without the Sun. I did the one thing you shouldn't do after eating a meal, I lied down and closed my eyes for a minute.
I awoke to a noise outside at midnight, so much for that. There's still tomorrow.

I'll add a few comments. Big thanks to the folks at the Trek bike shop for giving us the tour.
The bike shop owner told us this was the third-to-last bike actually built by Mr. De Rosa himself. A real stunner and a Holy Grail bike for many of us I'm sure:
See, my girlfriend refuses to let me redecorate our bathroom like this. Am I being unreasonable?
Tribute to Ryder Hesjedal who despite a crash, finished 24th in the last of the three grand tours of the season, the Vuelta a Espana which ended last Sunday. Garmin Sharp will merge will the Cannondale team so it looks like Hesjedal will switch from Cervelos to riding Cannondales.
Only Treks for sale at this shop as seen here.
Tribute to Olympic Gold medalist in triathlon Simon Whitfield, also from Victoria. His gold medal Guru bike is on the left.
Make sure you click on the large versions to see the vintage bikes in all their glory.

Victoria, BC: Day 2
Sunday, another warm and sunny day...decided to take the last ferry to the USA at 7:30pm to maximize my visit.
With all my gear packed and strapped to the bike, I bid farewell to the very friendly and helpful staff at the funky hostel in town.
My first experience in one, and a fun one thanks to them.
I wanted to ride to the coast and return along it, so I headed east until I reached the strait at Gracepoint. This would have been part of my nightly ride yesterday, but now will ride back into the harbor.

Some proof that I was in Canada (a joke between Drillium Dude, scozim and I).

After a wrong turn into an exclusive shore front property, and steep climbs, I made quick progress and found myself at the harbor breakwater. Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to take a bike onto it.
Nice walk and view at the end of it.

Regarding that Gracepoint sign on the oceanfront:
You may be checking various maps in vain trying to find it. Fact is, it's not real. That sign was installed for the filming of the FOX TV show "Gracepoint" coming this fall. It's only a few weeks old but it was weathered to make it look many years old. The producers graciously left it as a farewell gift. Either that or they didn't want to pay to take it to the dump. The City should name that point of land after the sign.
Great pictures! Hope you're enjoying the trip.
