I don't think I've seen your Bilenky before, would love to see more of it. And I could gaze lovingly at your Kvale all day long...
Southpaw's Mercian does have quite a lot of "just rightness." Mercians kind of define "classic," regardless of vintage.

The two of you both have some amazing bikes...
pcb's bruce Gordon particularly does it for me and GMG's Bilenky looks fantastic.

The bike is much closer to being finished.
I've added a VO decaleur for the bag, which is now a Swift Ozette.
I built a new front wheel with a Shimano dynamo, Dyad rim, DT spokes and an Edelux II front light. Still haven't settled on a permanent rear light.
I also added Compass Stampede Pass tires.
That really pushed the max with the fenders, as they are 700x32s.
Nothing wrong with the Strada Biancas, I just was itching to try the Compass tires.
Surprisingly, the bike handles like a dream without a load.
Handles like a champ with bags as well, which is great as I am riding this around Lake Superior next summer.
edit: As for the Kvale I think I'll do a thread sometime this winter highlighting his lug work on the examples I own.
The new purple one has the nicest paint of the three. Pictures simply don't do it justice.
I will try to build it next week.

There are so many neat features on the bike that my immensely meager camera skills don't capture.

It's about time we had a green thread. I never asked myself what my favorite bike color is, but I happen to have three green bikes, so there you go. Not only that, I actually CHOSE green for the Raleigh International I'm in the process of painting.
1971 Raleigh Super Course, looking might crusty
1995 Bianchi Volpe, my daily rider
1974 Raleigh International, still just a frame and fork
I apologize that I am a gawd-awful bike photographer. It's not for lack of trying!

I really like this bike! Very cool early example. I have really been enjoying riding my '72 Varsity as my commuter the last couple weeks. I really think Schwinn had something great going with the Varsity's. They have great paint jobs, lots of pretty chrome, are so good at soaking up the road vibrations and remaining stable over all sorts of terrain types, pavement, dirt, gravel, grass, whatever. Of course I also made a couple mods. to my Varsity. Most notably alloy wheels, a Suntour long-cage rear derailleur, lower gearing and aero brake levers. It's unfortunate that by the early 70's Schwinn didn't make some of those modifications themselves to be a bit more competitive. I also love the kickstands.
