Saddles: I Don't Understand...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I feel the same way, but sadly no one likes a smart ass.

Yup, Fizik put in a Kevlar reinforcement layer to make the saddle rip proof. So far, so good, 500+ miles.

I was like that when younger. With age my ass started wanting the finer things in bibs and saddles to make it happy.

Honestly, the shape matters more than the material. I've got a full carbon saddle and with a pair of Assos shorts it feels fine. I have numbness issues if I don't get a saddle with a good cut-out, which is probably the real challenge for finding saddles.

I'm with you - for me it means I have a stupidly cheap saddle from China, but I'm tempted to try a lightweight CF one since I know I'll be fine if the width is right. Inexpensive way to shed a few grams.

My ass is a leather hardened 44. Shouldn't your ass hide get tougher as you age?

I suppose if I had all the bikes I needed I'd also have more money to refine my saddle and other equipment. I've spent too much these past 3 years of riding purchasing a mountain, cross and road bike. I still "need" a hardtail mountain bike. After that, I'll work on spending money on the other stuff, like the "finer things". Rapha and Assos, here I come!

I think it is worth the try, for about $30 it can be something that you don't like you don't have to use again. Mine came in at 110g, sanded it down to 96g now. One day I might try to get it to 80g for the fun of it.

How about selle is also italian for saddle Doesn't that make more sense since the brand is called selle italia?

Yeah, I'm just more familiar with French- I totally forgot for a moment that all of the 'selle' brands are Italian. The word exists in both languages, Latin root.

I went through five saddles until I found one that worked for me. The worst saddle was was the Fizik Arione. I could only sit on it for about 10 minutes. I think the shape of the saddle made it a sit bone pry bar. The other three saddles caused numbness and the fifth one was just right and have been on the bike since 2008.
