where is everyone buying these paselas that are cracking and getting flats and deteriorating??

they are literally the most bulletproof tire ive owned. only recently after 5000 miles did mine get a sidewall cut from some sharp gravel at 25mph, lifetime punctures are probably close to 10, and i ride on some **** condition roads. id say at least 1/3 of those miles arent even on roads.

Yeah, this wasn't natural decay. They are maybe 1 week old, maybe two. Has a nasty gash and starting to bulge out.

Never had sidewall issues with either of my sets of Paselas either.

New bar tapes and hoods might be fun. For some reason I like wrapping bars, even though it brings out the 20% OCD in me.

I actually have new bar tape ready to go, was just holding out until this wore out a bit more. I already ordered hoods today. Now I just need to figure out if I can wrap the bars and do the hoods later...the hole in the hood doesn't bother me much but the tape looks horrible.

They ride great, the best bang for the buck tire out there, and look great. I too haven't flatted with paselas before, partly because they had their twilight days stolen from them?

I have been having problems with them nevertheless; which I shared around in this thread a bunch of pages before.


It got as bad as these casing defects spread all around the tire.

I had another picture that I shared here of one where the sidewall dried out and started separating along with the casing from the bead.

They don't age gracefully under everyday commuting. Then again, we wouldn't want panaracer to go out of business! #lightbulbtheory


I have another set on my commuter now and so far, aside from the sidewalls cracking due to UV (inevitable even with Pedro's spray on bike lust ala spray on wax as suggested scrod), so good.

Maybe the folding versions are better.... but that pushes this economical tire over the edge a bit.

i remember that post

mine get those little lines on the sidewalls but it doesnt seem to effect the integrity of the tire, since it happened about 2000 miles ago.

i also dont really leave my bikes parked outside for long periods in the sun either so maybe that has something to do with it

the sidewall cut that i got on the tire was about 1/4" long, i didnt boot it and pumped it back up. its still sitting in my wheel pile at pressure, not bulging or growing in size

im willing to bet that i would run out of meat on the tread before the tires started to actually fall apart on me

edit, an episode of the wire is apparently going down on the island

I've heard it said that sidewall cracks are only cosmetic, it's the underlying threads that maintain the structural integrity of the tire.

This was the perplexing part for me. They were on my paddywagon which I commute with the vast majority of the time.
However between the garage at home and my personal office, it only gets exposed to the sun while I'm riding it.

I hadn't learned about Pedro's bike lust wax at that time although most tires should do fine without it; from the factory.

Played leapfrog with a brand new 911 turbo s for pretty much the entire drive from the east bay. That was pretty fun.

Broke my saddle rail water bottle mount while messing with taking it on and off so much. I have a second different mount, but it will not fit with the aero post. To anyone considering riding a dedicated track frame on the street - you may want to rethink this. Simple things such as a water bottle for a nice long casual ride? You will need to come up with an alternative.

Did you tune your Tracker? Seriously, though. Seeing how recklessly rich morons drive their sports cars around on twisting canyon roads makes me think twice about ever riding a bike on those scenic roads.

You can take a piece of denim or cut out a piece from an inner tube box to use as a reinforcing boot. I rode my last rear Pasela to its end while booted with a large gash. As much as I love these tires for their ride and puncture resistance, they have not been bullet proof. The sidewalls are too damn delicate. Just like you, I commuted and off-roaded on them.

Which seat bottle mount do you have? I recently got this really simple one for my fixed gear for taking on longer rides, and am digging it.

^ I tried one of those and with a full 20oz bottle it would slide out of position on trails, didn't work for me.

Mine will move around if I don't have the velcro tight. Just have to really pull when I first put it on.

The soft rubber base tends to compress over time, such that I have to periodically retighten mine. Also, unless you have a really fat downtube, you have to trim the excess length of the velcro strap, so that it sits flush and tucked in.

Crazy ride last night.

I did a local shop ride last night to be social, and do something different. It was just a few of us; the leader (a shop employee) and some college kid were pretty fast, so it was fun.

Toward the end we are coming down Kearny Villa, a flat, fast, long and open road with a tailwind. Three of us are pacelining at ~30mph. While I'm on the front, taking a slightly extended pull, we come up on some big rocks in the bike lane, like softball-sized. By the time I had noticed them, I was already going through, fortunately I didn't hit any. Other two are tight on my wheel.

The third rider (shop employee, ride leader) hit one and went down. After a couple min. of laying down and calming down a bit, it was clear he had a broken collarbone - swelling, redness, and a clear protrusion from a displaced bone. Fortunately there wasn't significant damage to his bike or his body otherwise.

I feel kinda bad that I didn't notice them sooner, but sometimes they (road obstacles) just come up on ya. The whole time we had been pointing out obstacles and riding courteously. I don't feel personally responsible or guilty at all, just bad for the guy
