dumb noob outsider question about alleycats
i've never (obviously) been in an alleycat or anything like that but it seems fun as hell and something i'd like to do. i am not a messenger and always got the impression that these things were for messengers only, and as an outsider, the messenger crowd doesn't exactly seem like the most approachable crowd in the world and at least the (albeit ignorant) perception i get is that you kind of have to be a messenger to be part of that world or whatever, and since alleycats seem to be "their" thing, are these in fact messengers only? so basically are the uncool kids allowed in the clubhouse or should i just worry about something else?

i am a non messenger and have done a handfull of alleycats now. i have really never had a problem, and the messenger community has been really receptive. they are a fun crowd to get to know, even people like Mesngr
just race your ass off and everyone will love you.
also bring some PBR....

Lots of people are saying just **** it and ride, which is a good plan and will work most of the time. But there are definitely messenger only races. The Boston alleycat in the R1 stage race, for example, was advertised as messenger only. I considered showing up anyway, but decided against it because I'd never ridden an alleycat at the time and was too intimidated to force the issue. And I know lots of messengers in Boston. Like any "scene," certain kids get weird about outsiders. It'll always be like that. I just play it by ear. Show up to enough open races and you'll get a reputation that'll extend beyond the messenger qualification, so that hopefully you'll gain respect even if you've never delivered a package in your life. At least that's my plan.

You might just as well be blind.
It always seems to be so hard to give.
Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard.
And mostly what I need from you.
I can always find someone
to say they sympathize.
If I wear my heart out on my sleeve.
But I don't want some pretty face
to tell me pretty lies.
All I want is someone to believe.
Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard.
And mostly what I need from you.
I can find a lover.
I can find a friend.
I can have security until the bitter end.
Anyone can comfort me
with promises again.
I know, I know.
When I'm deep inside of me
don't be too concerned.
I won't as for nothin' while I'm gone.
But when I want sincerity
tell me where else can I turn.
Because you're the one I depend upon.
Honesty is such a lonely word.
Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard.
And mostly what I need from you.

You San Diego people know nothing about the angst darkness and cold bring. I think this leads to being unable to even spell sarcasm.
