Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New bike has arrived

New bike has arrived! I can't wait to go on the first 'adjust everything' ride this weekend. Hopefully this annoying cold/cough is gone by then... It's the Fuji Gran Fondo 2.5C with 105 I was eyeballing. Picked it up yesterday, added pedals, lezyne road caddy [full to the gills], two bottle cages. Removed all reflectors because I'm a rebel (and this bike does not ride at night). Dork-disk is coming off after everything has done stretching.

Here's a pic of it in the 'fresh from the shop' state. I can't wait to put some wear and tear on it.

I don't know what needs to stretch but I could not ride 10 feet with a dork disc still on.

By now I'm used to walking around holding my wife's purse and my kid's balloons. I'm immune to the effects of dork disks, but they look ugly.

That dork disk isn't even that offensive... unlike the huge black things that Cannondale puts on. Your limit screws aren't going to stretch at any rate.

Sorry for the ignorant newbie question, but what is a "dork disc"?

By the way, nice looking bike OP.

It's that big plastic disc in between the cassette and the spokes. Takes a minute to remove.

Or the spoke reflectors; those have to go ASAP...

Is there an easy way to get the dork disc off? I was trying to get one off my son's mtn bike, and damn, that sucker is some heavy duty plastic. I think I'm gonna have to take the cassette off to get it out of there.

Yes a lot of Oval components, FSA headset, Praxis Works chainrings, shimano 105 brakes, cassette, shifters and derailers.

Updated 'real life' picture 250 miles later. Reflectors and dork disc are out, bottle cages are in, italian road bike mirror (hard to see) and black handlebar tape installed. Hmm lezyne caddy seat back and QR seat clamp (for quick in and out of car) and some road grime.

Great move on changing the color of the bar tape. It looks much better.

I'd recommend burning it off. After all, plastic has a lower melting point than metal, so there's no way this could go wrong.

To substantiate that-

After you take the cassette off, cover the dork disk with carbon fiber vinyl and put it back on. All the cool kids will be jealous.

You can just upgrade directly to a $40 carbon spoke protector-

WMS Carbon Fiber Spoke protector

This will make you faster, obviously.

Do you realize how much slower you are with the dust caps on? And you're not fooling me, it's moved less than three feet between those two pictures!

Looks nice. I still like black bikes, especially with a splash of color. Ride the heck out of it.

Thank you. And yes I know the dust covers slow me down. I keep them on to go slow enough so I don't have to call my riding partner all the time to ask how many miles behind me he is.
