There are several reasons, She has edema in her legs, and she is not sure if she will be able to get the range of motion needed.

She is currently in the process of losing weight, and sometimes she gets dizzy because of her blood pressure, and diabetes. She is working on steadying both of those.

I keep telling her I know she can do it, but she is skeptical. We are looking for a nice step through comber with some gears for her. She won't let me buy it brand new because she is so unsure.

e-bike, or e-trike.

This would be the ultimate:

Steve I too battled edema, high blood pressure, and diabetes. I currently battle high blood pressure and diabetes (type 2).

for me the edema was caused by the blood pressure medication (Losartan Potassium). I started taking Invokana (diabetic oral) and that allowed me to cut my insulin. The exercise has helped my diabetes and my blood pressure.

If she is still uncertain have her look at a recumbent tricycle

I like the sun protection so I mountain bike and road ride with a visor... sorry, I know it ain't cool but I don't care... also ALWAYS use a Camelbak road or mountain... I don't need no stickin' rules!!!

Steve: I think it so sweet you want your wife to ride with you... but, you know you can't make her- she needs the "passion". Possibly your best bet is a tandem although for non-cyclists, learning to ride a tandem is scary. How about you compromise and do nice slow walks with your wife, someplace pretty where you can seat and watch ducks and just spend time together? Don't push... hopefully she will, on her own, want to join you on bikes...

That was the one thing I did not think about when I sent my comment. Better get that in order before doing something that requires balance.

You mean a full face shield like some motorcycle helmets have? If so, that's definitely not acceptable.

I am looking at one of the new Garmin bike computers (520 I think?) and a set of Speedplay pedals.

Still just saving up for a bike. I don't celebrate Christmas though, so I don't think I'll be getting any goodies. xD

Now that I have my health/weight under control, and have recently had a desire for speed, I think I'm going to get serious about the sport and buy a road bike

It is just received wisdom. Some of it makes sense, some of it, not so much.

In theory, if you are riding a road bike with race geometry, wearing a helmet with a visor could cut off part of your field of vision when you are riding in the drops. And it is less aerodynamic. If you ride in a more upright position, or at least not in the drops, and if you don't ride fast enough for aero to make much of a difference, then wear whatever helmet you like.

New remote-controlled garage door (yes, its applicable since I keep my bikes in there). The current one is +20 yo, and about a month ago it went up and didn't stop going up!!! The metal arm slider that pulls it up kept going backwards and crashed into the motor unit. I disconnected the door from the slider/motor attachment and now raise and lower it by hand.
