Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I also have an entry-level Giro that sees occasional use. It's nothing special.
I bought one. They're great lids---if they fit your head. They don't fit mine.

old faithful retired

Many happy miles under this helmet. But it got old and battered (like me) and it now holds a place of honor in my bike room.

Named in honor of my father in law who was a b-24 bombardier in WW II. He flew 24 missions over Germany and saw the first me 262 jets come up thru his formation. Told me he knew he was done for if they ever got to full production! The stories he told me about his experiences were fascinating. (Like trying to kick loose a bomb hung up on the bomb rack at 20,000 feet that would not release while standing on a narrow walkway, bomb doors open, and carrying a "walk around" oxygen bottle.)

Amazingly enough I found the 2 sets of decals for his plane at a model hobby shop, one of which was used to build a replica of his plane that I presented to him, the other set for my helmet.

Kask Rapido -- just wore this the first time yesterday. Love it. Actually fits my large (7 3/4 - 7 5/8 hat size) well and doesn't make me look like a mushroom. Well-ventilated and can actually fit my sunglasses in the side vents.

some Nashbar Ascent cheapie -- now my backup helmet. Cheap, and came in a large size. Served me well. Vents were too small, and they couldn't hold my sunglasses.

I don't name my helmets and won't. That's just tempting the crash that will put it out of service. I don't name my bikes either but not for that reason. Twice I realized that one of my bikes had a name; my Peter Mooney is Pete (and, no, not because of the builder or my brother or uncle, all of whom are Peter). And I realized my now retired "dumpster" was named Jessica. I did name the bike it inspired Jessica J before it was built but it owes its existence completely to the original Jessica.

I got a new helmet for Christmas. I have named it "White helmet" because it's white. I have now renamed my previous helmet to "winter helmet" and will tape over the holes and adjust the straps to accommodate a hat.

I only have one helmet, I don't race nor race in different disciplines so having more than one helmet is a waste for me. I own a Lazer Magma because that brand is one of the few brands that fit oblong heads and it came with a shallow visor that still makes it comfortable to ride a road bike with but also the visor is removable. This helmet may see it's last season this coming season if it makes it that far, it's just beginning to shred styrofoam onto my head when I'm sweating after about 6 years of use. Not sure what helmet I'll get next.
