Has anyone tried any shrinkage experiments? I got the XL and it's a little big but generally OK.

If I wanted to do that, how would you advise me?

Good question. I know how to OVER shrink them (this happened with a worn-out merino wool sweater that somehow made it into the dryer - used as a layer for my winter rides now). I was reading the comments on the LLBean website from people who claimed that they could buy a wool sweater a size larger than they needed, wash/dry it in some fashion which shrunk it to just the right size, and after that no shrinkage no matter the method. YMMV.

Some ideas here:

Does Merino wool shrink when washed?- Mtbr.com

I love the stuff. Target had some merino sweaters at a 50% discount last year - I paid around $25 each and I wear them year round. I also picked up a few of those very classy merino cycling jerseys that Widmer Bros. was blowing out for $11 or so last year. A little tight so I gave them to friends.

The clothes dryer will definitely shrink them, I thought we were trying NOT to shrink them. Hey, I hit a thrift store the other day, & found one of those British military wool sweaters, brand new with tags still on it. Original price was $35, but I got it for $4.99.

I got mine and conclude that these RUN LARGE, but no problem: if I can't get them to shrink a half-size I will just wear as an overshirt instead of an undershirt.
I'm pleased with the quality and the price.

90 degree F? Lightweight wool breathes well. But for anything that warm, I would stay with Capilene 1 base layers. Great stuff.

FWIW, anyone looking for a nice, lightweight Merino wool long sleeve shirt, these are great.
And fairly reasonable at this price.

These shirts are awesome...been wearing them for about five days now, and they're warm outside (10F) and comfortable inside (70F). My wife's ordered a couple for herself.

I just hit the TJ Maxx here, no merino wool shirts, and I asked a staff member. (I've already got two of the 11.99 Woolrich coming.)

She didn't know what merino wool was, anyway, just pointed me to the t-shirts.

There were a lot of base layers from 1005 polyester to 85/15 poly/cotton to 100% cotton, all of which claimed to be wicking material.
If I was a runner, I'd have been happy, as they had Asics winter running jerseys for pretty good prices. Too thick for base layers, though.

A trip to Ross Dress for Less found a better selection of Under Armour and Dri-Fit stuff, good prices, and some thinner running base layers.

I'm going to try to shrink one of my 2 today. Hot water wash, and dryer.
Probably ruin it. :>

The trendy claim over the last ten, 15 years or so.
It would be interesting to know who started that trend.

Great you guys bought all the large blacks! thanks a LOT!

kidding!

In my experience fit depends on the cut, most companies (like Icebreaker for example) have relaxed fit vs. technical body fit. I have two large icebreaker T-shirts and one is like a second skin and the other is a loose casual type shirt with a fun logo on the front. Same size, same company and completely different fit. I am not surprised that the woolrich are considered to run large as they tend to have a more casual and loose fit. I can't wear their large button downs because the bodies are like a garbage bag on me and the sleeves are too short.

I've washed my shirt about two times already with the normal wash and dryed with everything else and shrunk maybe a hair if that. I like the fit of the large I have but if anyone is looking for a black in large or medium. The TG Maxx close to me had a few left. $15 shipped since we have 6% tax and shipping would be 2.60. PM me if your interested. I'm not making anything but just helping folks out who may of wanted one of these who missed out. A friend of mine in Oregon went to look at his TG Maxx and Ross but came up empty handed and on the link I provided since their out of certain sizes now.

I would like 2 black mediums, Henry...if you'd do it. Thanks. Will PM you.

Also, if I can get these mediums, I have one large black I will pass on to someone, for cost, plus 2 bucks shipping.

Just as a heads up, I've been losing weight at a pretty good clip.

Down about 30 pounds since October.

At this rate, I will be out of these XLs soon enough.

That will leave a lot of my wool jerseys in the drawer.

Watch this space for a nice sale on wool by the end of spring.......

Rootboy, I'll take your large black if Henry can find you replacements.

By the way, Henry, that tubular bag in grey is 100% perfect. I'll send you a pic.

OK Robbie,

BTW, I tried to shrink the one I've worn. Hardly shrunk at all. I can wear it, have it on now, but a medium would be much mo' bettah.
Neck hole is rather huge on these larges.

My XL was 25" pit-to-pit and 32" collar to hem as bought. After hot wash and hot ruble dry it is still 25" PTP, and now 29.5" long. I wish it would shrink in the other dimension, as I need length and not width.

This, I often feel like sweater & shirt makers have no consideration for tall folk. Consequentially, my lower back seems to get cold, quicker than anything else.

This.
A full 2" to 3" longer than any of my other jerseys. 1st wash, delicate dry, about 1-2% shrinkage, maybe.
