goodbye clyde division, for good

6 feet, peaked at 219 lbs, but haven't been under 200 in about 2 years. Started the old diet and excercise, and today am 198 with plans to go to about 170....and stay there. So goodbye Clydes and best of luck in your pursuit of health.

How much easier is biking after losing a lot of weight? Anyone know from experience?

Best of luck.

Benny

Congrats!

Not sure how much easier it is to bike after losing weight, as the change is so gradual that I really didn't notice. I just biked through the whole thing, fat and not-so-fat. I may be different though. After my recent 55 pound weight loss people say to me, "You must have a lot more energy now!"

Not really. I really noticed an energy loss when I was heavier. I was just a fat guy with a lot of energy I guess.

I do notice I don't destroy rear wheel spokes as much as I used to.

You may not be a clyde anymore, but I find this is the most friendly and useful forum on BF. I'm (barely) under clyde status and stick around

Congrats on the weight loss. I know that there are other "recovering clydes" who stick around in this part of the forum after dropping below 200lbs.

Excellent.

Having grown past 200 pounds at least three times, I suspect it's once a Clydestale, always a Clydestale although one can be a recovering Clydestale who currently weighs much less than 200 pounds.

Most recently I shrunk from 205 to 135-137. That's enough I can ride over the Santa Cruz mountains (grades to 10%) at an endurance pace using gears like 30x23 or 30x26 (like 34 x 26 and 23 x 30) so I'm fresh for the hundred miles which follow.

Sans insulation I sweat 1/3 to 1/2 as much which is a lot more comfortable and lets me ride 60-70 miles on two 25oz bottles without stopping for water.

What?! Where? If it matters, I'm still considered overweight....

I don't know if I'm a better biker because I lost weight, or because I biked alot. It's hard to tell.

I'm also at 6ft and a hair under 190 lbs now (was as heavy as 240 lbs as recently as 4 years ago).

It's not really easier but you'll have increased endurance and you'll work just as hard as before to ride the same climbs and flats at a much faster pace.

It's never easier, you just go faster.

Now, how much faster are you after losing a lot of weight?

Ditto to the OP.

I am 195 cm and started at 106 kg when I returned from Christmas break. Losing slowly for the last couple of months and currently 95 or 96 kg so BMI now just ready to crack below 25.0. I have started using dumb-bells to improve upper body muscle mass and ...

I want to go below 90 kg - and will at this rate with lifestyle (diet and exercise) change. I am below the definition of a Clyde (BMI - 27.??) so Goodbye Clydes too - but I keep watching this forum. Besides, Clydes and Perchons are long time favourites of mine

I don't know if it's possible, even at a lower than recommended BF %, to get below 200 lbs. However if I did I'll always be a Clyde. I'm an over-eater by nature and much like people with other issues, it will always be there, silently lurking and waiting for me to slip into old habits. That's me anyways. For that reasons no matter my weight, bf % or level of fitness I'll always say "Hello, my name is Michael Henry, and I am a Clyde..." and the crowd will cheer!

About 2 years ago I used a combination of gym classes and riding to go from 250+ down to between 180 & 185. I will tell you that my riding was much more enjoyable. I felt a lot more free to try new hills, or go for longer distances with less fear. I did not always need my triple chainring bike. Occasionally I actually found that my average speeds on rides jumped MUCH more than the incremental amount from riding more miles alone as training.
Unfortunately, I sort of fell off the wagon & ended up mostly sedentary the next 2 years. During that time my weight bounced back to 230#. Challenging bike rides are much more daunting. The last 6 months I've been back on the pulse but right now I'm plateau-ridden at about 203-206 pounds. Riding feels good but not great (yet).
