Anybody do dialysis?

Anybody else out there on hemodialysis? I've been on dialysis for 1 year now, and while it's made it nearly impossible to keep myself gainfully employed, I've felt better than I have in years, and I'm to the point where I can do at least half-centuries again.

Wow.

Are you able to drive to your treatments?

Damn ... that's inspiring!

My Mom had an inexplicable case of kidney failure and was on dialysis for a couple of months before she recovered. Until you go to a dialysis center, you don't realize how many people are affected and how young many of them are.

Yes with a car, no for a bike. I wouldn't ride for at least 6 hours after a treatment for fear of 'breaking open' a site.

I was a dialysis nurse and saw how difficult it was for folks with renal insufficiency, old and young. Besides the risk of the clots breaking on fistulas and grafts, many folks are physically wiped out after treatment. If you're riding your bike at all you're way ahead of most folks on dialysis. Heck, you're ahead of me! I haven't ridden more than around 30 miles in any single day since I resumed cycling about six months ago.

My mother was on dialysis the last few years of her life. She opted for peritoneal dialysis. It didn't leave here wiped out like hemodialysis did. But she had to change fluids 3(?) times a day. This took about 20 min ea.

I'm happy you were able to return to long distance cycling. With polycystic kidneys dialysis may also be in my future so I am glad riding is still possible.

I'm impressed that the OP can ride at all, while requiring dialysis. My 3rd CKF scared me into getting straightened out in my nutrition and to lose 100 lbs, the nurse called with the lab results and she warned me that I was likely headed to dialysis is something was not done, most riki-tik. Good job on getting back to cycling, and doing a half century is remarkable.

Welcome to the 50+, too.

Bill

Yup, impressive and inspiring too. I've been in healthcare for twenty years, MICN. I certainly feel for those on dialysis. Keep at it, what ever it is you are doing, and always try to inspire those who live with dialysis. Lp

My issue with PKD was that I tried avoiding dialysis for 3 years by following a low protein diet that left me with very little energy. It got so bad, I hardly rode my bikes at all. Now that I can handle protein again, I can ride!
