Woke up with a bizarre swollen eyelid, like when you get stung by a bee, but no particular pain. On day 4 of this migraine, or whatever it is, much better than the first couple of days but still experiencing lingering headache and nausea, especially when driving. No idea if the eye thing is related. Back to the doc tomorrow. Maybe I'm just getting old.
Rode for an hour at low tempo and that made everything feel better, at least for now. Endorphins to the rescue.
I was looking at Strava for a couple of my masters racing peers, well the guys who tend to win anyway, and was a little surprised to see that all of them are in the 15-20 hours per week range. Pretty much everyone I can think of who is a serious threat to win any race (and who is also on Strava) is doing those kind of hours.

Same.
There are always the guys that can win on 6-10 hours, but those seem like outliers to me.

Did 77 miles and 5300ft vertical, hard pace. LOTS of time at threshold, over an hour total. Power meter zero'd out on my last hour.. still gave me 270tss. thinking it would have been over 300.

I just came across this, from 1991. Has this been discussed to death here? The interesting part is that even at the same power output, faster cyclists apply relatively more power on the downstroke and less on the upstroke. The faster group actually applied net negative torque on the upstroke, in other words letting the upstroke leg be dead weight (relatively) and letting the opposite pushing leg compensate.

... if this has been discussed to death sometime over the past 25 years, please disregard

The only time I've had anything approaching a round stroke was when my saddle was way too high. It sure did feel fast, but it definitely was not.

finally back home from our vacation. rode for 1:15 on zwift before the big soccer game. 80TSS
CTL last week before travel on July 1 - 63, CTL today - 53. last time it was at that level was May 19. Dumb question, but did I really lose over a month of fitness with a week off?

That wasn't Argentinian Hand of God, but that mis-called handball surely played a role in the outcome. Portugal was pressing, which is how they initially picked off the ball and led to the ball hitting Eder on the hand. Immediately afterwards, it was the freekick that hit the woodworks. Ball went out of bounds, and it was again a throw-in that got picked off, which set up the chain of events for the goal. Kiscielny was sitting on a yellow and couldn't really defend as closely, and Eder stiffed Kiscielny in the face, knocking the latter off balance, before getting off that amazing shot.
No honor amongst the Portuguese players, from Moutinho, whose pass hit Eder's hand and goes up to ask for the handball call, to Eder, who acts as if he were innocent.
About damn time they allow replay in games to stop bs like this from affecting the game.

4hrs15min of base miles with tempo intervals. 175TSS, wrapping up a 720TSS week (my biggest ever). ...this is the cost of taking things to the next level Rest week coming with a lactate test on Thursday. Racing starts again on the 20th.

CTL is technically an exponentially decaying average, but all else being equal you'd lose about 1/6 of your fitness after a week off, which is roughly what happened. It's a lot easier to lose CTL than to build it.

Also, rest is really important. Your form has gone up (your TSB is certainly positive now). Now you can crush some workouts. Your FTP probably didn't change at all, even though your CTL dropped.

At a certain point in the season rest is more important than crushing workouts. I have forgotten this, and have paid the price with mediocrity.

I did a 2:40 ride today. Pretty steady with a few short KOMs thrown in to break up the monotony. 187 TSS.
Brutal stupid heat and humidity continues. Dew points in the mid 70s everyday. Any efforts over a minute or two feel like death.
Managed 13.5 hours this week for 810 TSS and CTL is about 107. Think I'm going to pull it back a little with volume and do some shorter efforts. Need to work on my one to two minute power a few times over the next couple of weeks to prep for some upcoming races.

Anyway. 20' power test today - gotta get zones set more firmly for coming cross build. 265W. 4.7 W/kg. I'll take it.

Out of curiosity because I spend a ton of time on the trainer, is trainer time given more weight (most say 1 hr trainer = 1.5 hrs or so road) or do you guys just count it 1:1?

4 hours yesterday, 275tss..
Glued to the wheel of one of our cat 1 guys for 60+ miles with him on his TT bike. That was the fastest ive ever ridden 60 miles. He doesn't give much of a draft on his TT bike...so it was a game of find the best draft without touching wheels

1:40 yesterday with the boss. Nice ride. I felt pretty good.
If my best 20min on that ride came at the beginning when I wasn't even feeling good, and I certainly wasn't hammering or even hurting at all, and I managed 1.012 IF, is my FTP too low I assume?
My best 10 minutes had an actual average just below my FTP and I didn't even notice that I was working hard.
edit: I suppose I could just stop being a lazy ***** and actually test. Maybe today if I get time after tearing down the bottom end to kill that squeak.

Just got my first batch of CX prep workouts from the coach. Starts off with escalating sprints - 15", then 30", then 45". And this is the easy first week. FML.
If it was just a casual ride and you didn't feel blasted at the end, your FTP is definitely set too low.

Yeah, I could've done another hour, I was feeling pretty fresh. I was holding back a lot on the flats to not drope my boss.
Coming back from not riding at all I just stabbed in the dark at my FTP, and I think it was accurate at the beginning, but a month of fitness starting from none the gains come quickly.

last saturday 4/5 raod race, 70 field. Scorching heat 90-100 deg 50 miles of rollers. Team tried to get away on a break but guys chased like mad, tried to pound guys to thin the herd then crashed at mile 30 when a guy attacked, redlined and was being swallowed by the pack. Sore right leg, right shifter RIP. Easy week, just planless commutes on cross bike..forgot howmuch fun CX bikes are.

apparently i've become someone who only trains indoors, bike is usually on the trainer with the tire on, and by the time i'm able to find time to get out, it's near high noon and i'm too lazy to spend ~5 mins changing a tire. and now I have an AC in the basement blowing cold air at me, so there we go i guess. 2hrs z2
