Too Light to Clip into Dura Ace Pedals????
Hi Everyone,
I recently bought the Scott Plasma RC Edition and so to match such a great bike I bought the Dura Ace 9000 Pedals.
After putting them onto my bike I could not clip in. I put them on the lightest setting and could only get a half clip in even when bouncing my entire bodyweight onto the pedals. I tried swapping new cleats onto my shoes and it made no difference. On my current bike I have light action pedals so can clip in but can you be too light to clip into the Dura Ace pedals???
I weigh 60kg.
Does anyone know any solutions.
I cannon put a light action spring into my DA pedals as is an enclosed mechanism but want some lighter shimano pedals then my box standard light action SPD's.

My Cleats came with shims to put first on the shoe then install the cleat.

There is obviously something not right with the pedals or the cleats. Do you have cleat covers on the cleats?

You may do better listing yourself as 130#. I doubt there are many in this forum that are your weight, so you may not get many answers.
I know a female cyclist who is about 120# I believe she has 9000 pedals. I'll ask and see if she has had any issues.

Make sure your using the provided cleats.
Insure the pedals aren't on backwards.
I'm around 62.5kg. Using Shimano Ultegra 6800 pedals. I have no issues clipping in or out. also set to the lightest setting.

Change your technique, don't just press down. Try rotating into it more, pressure goes to the toes, then roll back into it.
Also, the cleats with blue tabs come with the 9000 pedals and may be the problem. They have less float and are more particular.
You make want to get the yellow tabbed cleats instead.

Well, if they're on backwards, she'll be needing a new crankset. Hope that's not the case.

My wife also struggled to not only get clipped in, she had a bear of a time unclipping. Sometimes it is technique, sometimes it's just not gonna happen. We've gone through SPD-SL, Look Delta and Keo, even Speedplay Light Action.
What she has now is a set of Crank Bros. Candy pedals and they're the easiest by far for her to get in and out of. Don't be afraid to try different pedal systems. At the end of the day, if you hesitate to ride, you won't ride.
edit -- I re-read your post. I'd put your old pedals on the new bike and move on.

Try greasing the cleat/pedal area and remember to take off your cleats before going indoors.
I know of 40kg riders on DuraAce pedals. Lots of U12 juniors ride that setup.
Could you possibly have the look/Mavic cleats - or old Shimano? They are different and look the same.

Are you clipping in toe first then pressing down? Unlike SPD pedals, you can't just stomp your way into an SPD-SL. That said, SPD-SL pedals in my experience are 'tight' at first. Clipping and unclipping gets much easier after a short break-in period. Perhaps have someone with more heft break in your pedals and then try again. Or just get a pair of used cleats and see if that helps. The pedals themselves don't wear much but the cleats definitely do.

Yea, your bodyweight shouldn't be a problem. Plenty of sub 60kg people out there using those pedals, including a large chunk of the lady's pro peloton and some of the men as well. You should be able to clip your shoes in just using your hands while off the bike.
Maybe try that and be careful to get the front of the cleat in first, then push down on the back.

OP: have you used SPD-SLs or similar previously? With SPD-SLs, you need to get the front of the cleat properly seated in the front of the pedal and then step down to click the rear of the cleat into place. This requires a bit of technique and you need to develop a feel for when the cleat and pedal are correctly aligned with respect to each other. With SPD-SLs, you can't just stomp down like you do with SPDs.

I have the yellow cleats on my shoes. tried both brand new and my very worn in cleats neither work.
And no my pedals are not on backwards and I don't have cleat covers.
And yes i push the toe end in then move my weight back onto the back of the pedal. As i've been doing for years on my light action Shimano SPD pedals.

Verify that there is not something on the sole of your shoe that is interfering with the pedal body. Perhaps even borrow some other shoes to try if possible or have your LBS try them out. Something is wrong but I dohbt it is the pedals themselves. There just isn't much to go wrong on them.

I have DA pedals, & they are a bit stiffer to clip in & out than various others.
A petite woman that I ride with sometimes once showed up with some fancy new pedals,
and could not unclip, partly do to (running) knee issues. Had to hold her up and take her shoes off.
She abandoned the ride & went to return the pedals.

If you have SPD cleats then they will not clip into SPD-SL. Are your pedals light action SPD or SPD-SL?

A friend of mine is around that weight, uses DuraAce pedals, no problem. So I don't know what's wrong, but it's not a too-light problem.
Make sure you didn't adjust the spring the wrong way.
