Cantilever brake thingy...

What is the piece called that goes under the mounting studs? Circular or a tab with three holes in it. I believe it's to clip the return spring into. I went to my LBS and they didn't have any. Odd? Doesn't help that I don't know what to call them either. Bottom line I'm in need of two of them.

Mine are welded on. Depending on what hole you use it will set up more or less preload on the spring then u can fine tune the spring tension with the set screw.

The 3-holed tab that the spring goes into is part of the frame on my bike.

Check the Park Tool website tutorial on adjusting cantilever brakes. I seem to recall their video tutorial showing an example of a 3-hole tab that was detachable. Might have been another repair site's video tutorial -- I watched a dozen of 'em last year while learning to adjust my canti brakes. It's a permanent part of the lug on the frame of my bike with canti brakes.

I have yet to see a cantilever boss that doesn't have the return spring tab as an integral part. What kind of oddball frame do you have?

Believe it or not, but it's an IF deluxe. They are indeed separate as one is still in place under the mounting stud. I need to find at least one. Help!

Paul's Brakes don't use those spring anchor plates .. they back wind the spring within each side,
and the mounting bolt secures them,
they also include their own sleeve bushing for O ring sealing the lubricating grease inside.

Excellent products.

Make sure the brakes are compatible with your brake levers. Some STI levers will not work with some v-brakes.

yep, the Motolite is a long pull v-brake. not for STI. I put avid shorty canti on my surly when I went STI.

Some, rare, cantilever brakes rely on the bolt to tension the spring (similar to U-brakes).

Agreed. I actually LIKE the old types of cantilevers that are tensioned by a nut on the back side of the arm then held in place with the fixing bolt. Very easy to adjust, you just don't see them that often. In fact, a pair came in on a Trek 930 (probably early 90s) we started working on yesterday.

Also had some on my old Schwinn Impact MOS. No idea how to adjust them until I played with them for a while.

Check out "Travel Agent" for mixing brakes and levers with different pull ratios. A little strange looking but they work well.
