What is happening to my cycling bib? Is this wearout? (Photos)

I've owned this bib for about 3 years now. Something seems to be happening to the material, like it is degrading or something. Is this normal wear & tear? Time for a new bib? Or did I not care for it properly?

I wash it on cold cycle with detergent, no fabric softener. I let it hang dry.

These photos are right after it came out of the washing machine.

I have the same bibs.

Looks like salt stains from sweat.

Salt stains from sweat should wash right out, unless that hasn't been washed yet...ugh.

Maybe someone spilled bleach on it accidentally.

Is the first pic a photo of the back side? Do you put a lot of items in your jersey pockets? Those look like fabric erosion marks from constant rubbing.

In the first photo, enlarged to 400%, it appears that there are frayed threads in the material behind the webbing. I would look at it with a magnifying glass to be positive that it's not. If there's no fraying, it could be a stain of some sort. Hard to tell from a photo.

+1

This looks like the normal process of Lycra fabric breaking down. It happens as the elastic strands unravel from the non-elastic component, and will progress until you have "dead" areas, which slowly expand until you decide it's time to retire it.

Looks like you still have time, but it's the beginning of the end.

Yes it is the back side. I keep my phone and maybe some snacks in the jersey pockets. But it doesn't explain the wear on the shoulder straps, on the front of the bib.

Good point, I will have to check...
That 'stain' does actually rub off when I rub it with my fingers.
