How bad@#$ is it in face/off when there's the line "I hate cops" and it's followed with a cop getting blasted in the chest with a shotgun? I'm not about killing cops, it's just holywood at it's best.

I like most of the Coen Brothers movies, and a lot of Kubrick... On that note I was recently exposed to Barry Lyndon - some of the landscape filming and backdrops are just jaw-dropping.

Calamari Marionette Ph.D
Five Centimeters has very deliberately slow pacing. Very calming, very contemplative, very adult. Camera panning that is SO slow, it almost goes undetected. And it's a beautiful romantic drama.
The other two are ever-so-slightly more traditional films. Emphasis on ever-so-sightly. Still aimed at adults, still deep and heavy, still gorgeous. They just have a different pacing. Nothing like modern American cinema, though.
You can decide. Five Centimeters was the first I saw and it caused me to instantly seek out all his work. A couple old ones still aren't available on home media in the states.
I consider his films "experiences", not escapism entertainment (which I also dig).
If you enjoy adult animation I have a few others to recommend. FWIW, I only recommend movies that have blown me away. Not 3 star, not 4 star, not 5 star. Only flicks that get permanently tattooed in my brain on the first viewing. Films that affect me.
Chico and Rita. (2010) Takes place in Havana during the late 40s and early 50s and present day. The storytelling is brilliantly non-linear. Absolutely fantastic. The animation, the period clothes, the period cars, the MUSIC, the PASSION of the culture, it's all awesome. A beautiful celebration of life. The tunes alone are worth it.
Waltz with Bashir (2008) It's an Israeli film about a couple guys having dinner. During conversation they both discover that they have significant repressed memories caused by PTSD from their time in 1982 Lebanon war. 100% adult. Genius non-linear storytelling that peels back layer after layer. HEAVY war drama. Powerful themes at work here. A lot of it is very surreal.

This one is Studio Ghibli, but not Miyazaki.This one is on my top ten list of all time. It left me bawling on the floor like an 8 year old girl. F'cked up my head for a few days. Tragic. Think "Sophie's Choice" type tragic. Think "Aronofsky" type tragic.
Grave of the Fireflies (1988) Two small siblings try to survive in post WWII Japan, alone, after America bombed a lot of their country into oblivion. Food? Good luck. Shelter? Good luck. Assistance? Good luck.
