I'm in a hilly area and use 39x16t with 27" x 1.25" (630-32) Gatorskin, which works out to 66". Also have a 18t free wheel on the flip / flop for 59". Don't really use that. I put it on in case I am on a long ride and get tired.

My fixed gear has a Surly Dingle cog and two chain rings. So I have three gears readily available.
39 x 21 50"
39 x 17 62"
42 x 17 67"
I typically use the 62" for commuting and around town. The 67" works good for me on a 10-mile training loop. The 50" got used one weekend for a beginner's camping ride.

Nope. No typo. the flipside to my training wheel has a 14t on it and I run that mid/late race season when I'm in better/the best shape. I usually only run that on 30-60 mile flat training rides but have run it on non-hilly/non-windy Centuries. Otherwise all my Centuries are run on the 16t. Here's my 51x14 on an old(er) race night.......................

I have a gearing question figure you folks are have it in the front of your mind.
When picking a gearing option is there any advantage a large or small chain ring if the final gearing ratio is the same.
Obviously it's cheaper to experiment with cogs as they are less expensive they Chainrings.

last two gravel races i've used 39/21. this may sound spinny but these gravel races are anywhere from 54 to 75 miles with 7500 ft. of climb. yes, the flats kinda sucked but i wasn't hating the gearing on the multiple climbs.
did the Pittsburgh Dirty Dozen using this gearing too.

49/18 on 700c x 23mm, with 165mm cranks.
All of these variables affect the gearing between foot and road.
I can get up the two longest biggest hills in my area, but it's a struggle and I had to give up once when my back went ping! I need my brakes on long descents but can spin down most of the hills within an hour's ride locally.
