...but got more than I'd bargained for! My wife -- who also commuted today -- suggested we meet up during our return commutes and take a "detour" to get some extra miles in. So we hooked up a couple miles from my office and then rode across the river together and up through the woods for an extra hour or so. Got home well after dark. Wound up with 40 miles total for the day.

Out at 12:37AM for a nice quiet 42 miles. Temperature was a warm 84F with plenty of humidity made for the typical "Glad the sun isn't shining" thoughts as I pedaled along in my COSMIC DRIFT.
Made it back home in time for the launch of the Parker Solar Probe but last minute glitch cancelled today's liftoff. Hopefully tomorrow's sky will be as clear as today's allowing a great view of the rocket launch even though I'm on the west coast of Fl.

I just got back from a quick 13.65 mile ride (my normal ride, same thing every time...) down to the James River and along Riverside Drive and back. 55:19 was the time, including the nasty hill near the Univ of Richmond, but I make it up it like "the little engine that could".
The route....
Anyone want some Sushi? Ironic photo... My '85 Fuji was made in Japan, so look across the street, and you'll see Osaka Restaurant & Sushi Bar!
Lastly, here's the new traffic circle/roundabout that they build last year at the end of Riverside Drive.

Right after hitting up the local Farmers Market for some fresh veggies early this morning, I headed out into the county to ride some nice hilly country roads.
Got in 2.0 hours.

The temperature has been over 100° the last 3 days and the smoke from the forest fires made the air quality bad, so I didn't ride for 3 days. Today it was 78° with clear air so I did the same 51 miles I usually do. I was watching some of the video I took with video I took with my handle bar cam. When I'm riding down the big hills at 35 mph, the riders going up hill look like they're doing 45 up, impressive. Tomorrow it's going to be 84° but the 8 days after that it's going to be in the high 90s
Some day these mountains and the other 5 or 6 near here are going to erupt again.

I road from the Herring Creek trailhead to Richmond and back today on the Capital Trail. Hot an humid but no rain. Ate lunch on the way back. Good BBQ and greens.
May need a bigger bike.

Weekend Update:
- Saturday was plagued with torrential downpours for most of the day. In a brazen act of faith I went out for a ride around 3:00PM, thinking there was a ~1 hour window between incoming stormfronts based on Dark Sky's weather radar maps. The window turned out to be 3 minutes. I still slogged it out for 7.5 miles.
- Sunday we were supposed to take the train up to Cold Spring and do a 50 mile dirt ride, but weather forecasts made that look like a stupid idea. Instead slept in, then went out with the missus and did a 55 mile local road ride.
Today I will not ride.

Just finished 4 day/3 night stay at Maidstone Lake State Park in VT’s Northeast Kingdom. Took the kayak but never used it. Rode every day on deserted back roads and forest roads. 120 delightful if sometimes rough and hilly miles in all.

19 miles as a bike commuter today.
news today is that one of the e-scooter companies is back in town after indy has formalized rules for their operations - so now I’ll have to be on the lookout for e-scooters

Started out on an early dawn 4-person group ride but turned around at mile 10 and solo'd home because I have a new morning schedule for the next 6 weeks. Math being what it is, I got exactly 20 miles for the day.
Really foggy out this morning, it was spooky.

The return to cycling entered its 9th day today with my 8th ride.
This time I had company: my old riding partner Sambo and his wife Miss Penny.
I was glad to see Miss Penny today because I knew she would keep the pace under control,
and I wouldn't work too hard trying to keep up with Sambo.
He's one of those kind of guys who can lay off the bike for 2 months, then hop on and do 30 miles @16average.
As I have been off for over a year with leg/knee issues, I am NOT in that kind of shape.
Today's 9 miler featured a couple small hills, otherwise pretty flat.
The 13.4 average was a bit tamer than I had been doing, but I felt good at the end...........
Tomorrow probably longer and flatter..........

Got out a bit late this morning and had to push it to make the 8:30AM park departure. Made it by 8:29 but nobody in my group was there so off on my own. Was feeling pretty good until the 50 mile mark and then the heat plus still tired legs from last Thursday's 201 miler began to slow things down. Limped back home with 70 miles completed.

50 miles, I was going to ride yesterday when it was much cooler and good air quality, but I had to help my daughter with her car problem. Today it was 91° and the air quality was unhealthy for Sensitive Groups, 96. Couldn't see the mountains. August is smoke month, We have lower level winds blowing in smoke from Canada and higher level winds blowing in smoke from California. We don't have any fires near here. Last year was very bad, I was riding with a N95 respirator for 5 weeks. I probably will need to start using it soon.

Did 11 1/2 this morning. Longest ride of the return to cycling.
Course got to rolling a bit, kinda wore on me after several days in a row of riding.
Gonna take to morrow off, then go longer on Saturday.

Definitley!
Only 14 today, but yesterday was 60 with 2700 feet of ascent... Very hilly out here in southern Indiana. I try to do 15 a day, with on 40+ ride once a week.
