Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am interested in buying a quality gruppo, but don't want to pay the premium for the latest, greatest for my road bike build-up. Where I can find a significantly reduced price 9-speed Ultegra gruppo (6500?)? I would also consider 9-speed 105 or 9-speed DA if the price was right.

Thanks.

I doubt you'll find an entire NOS group, but if you search eBay, and with some patience, you'll be able to put a group together at a good price. There's lots of DA9 on there right now at some pretty good prices.

Performance's Holiday mailer had 9 speed 105 components on closeout. I would check online, as well as the store if you have one nearby. Give Nashbar a shot too.

I should sell you my DA 9-sp group so I can waste the money on the Chorus stuff I've been talking about.

Why limit yourself to Shimano? And why only 9 speed?

I am also doing something similar.

Nashbar has 105 9-speed cranks and cassettes on sale. Can't help you too much with Ultegra/DA, though.

Check out this site for cheap 105 crank:

the reason why I think the 9 speeds are so cheap is because the new 105 is going to be very reasonably priced....

I recently did a build with almost all new 105 and a used Ultegra crank. I got a both the FD and RD brand new for only $26 on ebay. It takes time and you have to check often. I got the shifters on a BIN about 15 minutes after they were listed.

And for what its worth. I have DA 9 set up on one bike and the new 105 on an older frame. I had a previous bike that was Ultegra. The 105 is very nice. Definitely the best deal out there. I would have to get a very good deal on components to build with DA again.

Got Steve's Dura Ace Group there for just over $1,000....the whole group! They were a little slow with shipping. They are a LBS in Texas so I felt I could trust them. They take payment through Paypal which is another +. Also, you can customize your set by selecting the options you want.

Not a bad deal!

Two reasons for my choice.

#1. I bought one of the last $100 Korso wheelsets which says it is only for 8 or 9 speed.

#2 Just got an Ergomo with a V1 Octalink bottom bracket.

That said, I thought 9-speed Shimano would be fine. I am still getting back into bikes and don't know my alternatives, which I am open to. Let me know. I'll post pics once I find a frame/fork etc. I plan to do a low price quality build as I mentioned earlier. Everything needs to be fairly stout as I am fairly heavy (100kg and soon to be 90ish) and pretty strong, but am generally pretty gentle to my bikes.

FWIW I have a decent mt bike, FULL 8-speed XT-R including seat post and a slightly modded Langster, but have decided to get some gears for the road.

A Shimano 10 speed cassette will work on that wheel set, so if you want 10s get 10s. That said 9 spd is fine and probably the better choice.

Buy a whole bike with low miles off of ebay with the component group that you want, and then sell the frame, wheels, etc to help cover it. With a good purchase and some ebay luck, you can just about keep the group and sell the leftovers for break even. I just picked up a 9 speed DA bike with approx 500 miles for 880 delivered. I am actually going to keep about everything. There are some good Cannondale DA groups to be had - the frames have a high resale. Look around and study what things go for and you can build a bike for REALLY CHEAP with slightly used components!

Hey meek, fwiw I have also been doing the same thing. It's funny but I just got the last set of Korso's here for 70-10% at the supergo/performance I have spent the last 4 months slowly getting all my parts, taking my time and getting some fantastic deals with the nashbar/performance coupons and supergo closeouts and other info I got off this site. I have everything except a ultegra rd(I do have a 105 rd but want an ulegra 6500).

The best bang for the buck right now is the 9 speed 105 and ultegra and if you look around you will get some fantastic deals....for example I ordered the 69 crankset(above link)at jenson about 4 weeks ago, for 69 it is a giveaway for a great crankset...if you decide to order it ask for Lee#118....great guy.

I was going to post this later but here are some of the deals, these are all the prices after coupons, closeouts, deals etc. that I have purchased in the last 4-5 months.

ultegra brake set-59.00
ultegra bb-30.00
ultegra shifters/brakes-139.00
2 sets ultegra cassettes-30.00 each
easton ascent II wheelset-379.00
4 thompson seatposts-25.00 each my- best score
flyte ti saddle-10.00
easton ec90 equipe carbon bar-75.00
2 thompson elite stems-28.00 each
korso wheelset-70.00
2 gel tape-1.00
2 cinelli cork tape-8.00
2 carbon cages-8 each

and of course my new pedal force carbon frame for 650.00 and pd carbon fork 150.00 which I consider a deal, also some other stuff can't remember now but you get the picture

I wouldn't have found out about this stuff if it weren't for the bikeforums people, so I guess all I can say is use this forum and search around, you can build up a bike with new stuff pretty cheaply and in the process have fun, save some $ and learn some interesting things about bikes....jk
