Is it the wrong time to buy an Ultegra 8070 bike?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is it the wrong time to buy an Ultegra 8070 bike?

I see that it was launched in June 2017. Likely that they might launch a new version anytime soon?

No urgency for me to buy a bike other than the itch, so, am willing to wait a while if this is soon going to be replaced.

We'll see a new Dura-Ace groupset first, and Ultegra will follow 1-2 years later.

Thanks. Makes my decision easier. Dura Ace is anyway nowhere near my budget.

3 year release cycle....barring Shimano jumping the gun to get 12-speed out.

Yes Ultegra R8000 was "released" in 2017...but you couldn't buy it until 2018.

Oh, had no clue that it was sold only in 2018. That makes it reasonably recent.

With Ultegra, particularly Di2...you cannot buy the stuff for love or money until 6-months after "release"....what production there is all goes to OEMs, and when they have it is a wildcard. And then there's what they call it. Trek already has MY2020 on their website, and it is only February 2019.

I don't see it as a reason not to buy a new bike.
It won't be replaced for a while and any improvement that is coming will be tiny.
eg, look at the difference between 8... and previous 68...
I would only wait if you want Shimano12sp, whenever it arrives.

Shimano released 12 speed in May 2018....for Shimano XTR: https://bike.shimano.com/en-US/infor...ebut-new-.html

All that kerfuffle about Shimano's new "Microspline" FH body, was part of it. Which BTW for those wondering AFAIK if you have a DT Swiss or Onyx hubset, you should be able to plop in a new microspline FH body and be all set for 12 speed....unlike probably every other hubset on the market

Nice.
I don’t think the word kerfuffle gets enough print time

I was referring to road group sets as that is what the OP is interested in.

Shimano is typically on a four year cycle regarding group upgrades. Dura Ace being first, then Ultegra, then 105, then whatever is below that, etc.

The updates are usually small but well thought-out so if you have the previous version you aren't really that far behind.

I wouldn't worry about it and if you like the bike, buy it.

The Classic and Vintage folks are riding stuff older than your parents and having a blast.
