We don't wear high socks. (I am using "we" in the royal sense). Not because I think high socks are nerdy/fredist/roadnaziist. I wear them because they are the only type of socks I have that I actually like. However, when it's cold, I like a pair a knee length wool socks to wear under my knickers. I find that much more comfortable than tights for some reason.

The reason
If you have a bicycle fall and also have your feet tied to the pedals it is better to have your ankles protected as they will be the first point of contact if you slip on the road so buy a good pair of socks that protect your ankle well or you will remember this post

I also don't understand the point about protecting your ankles in case of a crash. I've crashed my bike before in a way where my feet were still attached: got a nice contusion on my hip, road rash on my elbows, destroyed my bibs and jersey, and even tore my gloves on the knuckles. But ankles? Nothing.

But to answer the question - if there was one posed - I try to go for low cut socks. The showing ankle kind. I guess it has more to do with not wanting tan lines than anything else. In both of my crashes, my ankles came out unscathed...touch wood!

I only own "regular" ankle covering socks. I wear the same socks with dress shoes as I wear for cycling, just plain grey or black socks that come in a pack of 4-5.
Never thought about it. And if you are thinking about which socks you should be wearing... you are probably overthinking it.

I didn't know this thread was 12 years old, then I started reading seeing "Lance, lance, lance" everywhere, then I looked up and saw this was from 2007. I figured even the most triggered Lance haters have moved on by now...

However, the crew length socks allow more room for snarky sayings, larger beer mugs, company logos(of course!), or more warmth on cool days. I avoid cotton socks like the plague. They do not work well down here in Alabama with high temps and high humidity. Don't need no swamp foot.
I do cringe when I see cyclists(more likely, triathletes) with knee-high compression socks. Limits, man! Limits!

winter time i wear longer sock, sometimes two pairs of socks. I used to wear Smartwool 1/4 phd socks. love them but in the summer cheap nashbar ones have worked fine as well. I am not a fan of having a tan line mid calf..

We don't just consider ourselves better, we ARE better. MUCH better than those ridiculous tri-guys. Sock length is critical to maintaining our superiority, and only lesser beings would be foolish enough ti appear in socks less than three or more than five inches tall. Dear God, next thing you know, they'll be wearing sleeveless jerseys and letting their leg hair grow!
