Your Weekend Ride Reports -- June 22/23
Tell us all about your cycling this weekend!!
Down here, we've just had our shortest daylight day of the year ... but in the other hemisphere, some of you could have put in a very long daylight ride!

Saturday - Went out early in the cold but still didn't beat the winds. Legs dead from a week of battling the afternoon winds. Today I started out behind a group of three doing a paceline. Normally I can hunt those folks down. Today after 6 miles I may have closed on them by about 10 seconds. Legs had nothing. Anyway, did 25 miles on the ol' Ribble but the pace was nothing to speak of. Beautiful morning out. I stopped late in the ride to watch a red fox hunting in a mowed field and snapped a picture of the Mt's then.

Ya just getting back into cycling, did about a 20 mile ride on Saturday. Slowly getting my legs/lungs back into cycling shape. It's actually nice to have gotten away from it a while and then come back to it. Feels a bit new and fresh I guess rather than a old hobby.

Sunday -- First ride on a relatively flat southern route since April 2017. It was challenging because it is one of the longer rides we've done since Rowan's accident and also one of the hillier ones ... despite the relative flatness of the route. However, it was a nice ride in some different scenery.
Chilly day with high of 10C and cooling down to 8C with a "Feels Like" temp of 6C the whole time. A bit overcast and light winds.
Distance: 30.48km
Elevation: 293m
Moving Time: 1:52:46
Elapsed Time: 1:59:54
Speed: Avg: 16.2km/h | Max: 37.8km/h

Sunday - Back out on the same 25 mile route. This time the pace was a whole lot better. The good ol' Davidson refuses to go slow even if my legs are stiff and tired.

On Saturday, myself and around 750 others departed Minster, Isle of Sheppey in Kent UK at 4:41 am in hopes of making it 206 miles to Burnham-On-Sea before the sun set for Chase the Sun- UK South 2019. And I'm happy to say myself and my club mates made it with 6 minutes to spare. It was a physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting day. But worth it and incredibly satisfying.
It was an incredibly well organised ride despite being unsigned and unsupported. However, the amount of support from other riders, friends and family acting as support vehicles en route, and the local communities was incredible. Everything from people outside their houses cheering you on, words of encouragement from passing cars, the YMCA setting up feed stations in lay-bys en route and holding out lucozade for passing riders to grab as they rode by. As the miles ticked up and day dragged on, it helped. If anyone is up for a challenge, and fancies coming to this side of the pond, I would strongly recommend it. The only really dodgy bit: cycling through London with all of its traffic-- makes me look forward to Ride London in August when I get to tackle the 2012 Olympic route on closed roads.
Stats: 206 miles, 9649 ft of climbing, 14.5mph and 14:10 minutes riding time.
Me, at the finish, with the sun setting in the background

Second ride of the year yesterday morning, 35 miles on the Minneapolis/St. Paul Grand Rounds system, up and down the Mississippi and around the lakes in uptown, for those familiar. Was a beautiful morning with super blue sky. Longer than I planned to do, felt great.

135km up and down Mt. St. Helen's. Weather was kid of dicey for the whole ride, and I definitely did not pack the right clothes for the ride, but I made it. In nicer weather I think the ride would be brilliant.

In reverse order...
Saturday: Cruddy day, with a looming threat of rain. I went out into a nasty headwind, and cranked hard with a tailwind coming back...unsurprisingly, got 3 PRs, all of which beat the current QOM times (I quit the leaderboards!) 29 miles, 1,158'.
Wednesday: Perfect weather, perfect day to blow off work. This was a recon ride for an event over Labor Day Weekend featuring the Driftless Monsters (where a 'monster' is defined as a climb with at least 400' elevation gain and max grade of 14% or higher.) Other than the climbs, not a bad ride! 100.5 miles, 4,541'.
My friends take pictures:
Tuesday: Supposed to be an easy ride with a training partner, though when we ride together it's generally not easy. At least we didn't do any real hills! 44.3 miles, 1,096'...and an easy 18.9 mph average

Mostly worked on my heat adaptation last week. June is always my tough transition month, as Texas tends to go from cool to blistering hot without much transition. So I rode Monday through Friday, from short interval sessions to longer 35-45 mile group rides. And I was looking forward to some large group event rides this weekend but... I was tuckered out from the week of riding in midday heat! So I napped while my friends did the big event rides. They had fun. I enjoyed seeing their Facebook posts.
Well, I did ride 6 miles Friday for interval training in 110F heat index, and 10 miles Sunday evening to test some drivetrain adjustments. Got home a few minutes before a ferocious t-storm hit. I'll call that a win.

I did my usual ride from my home in Santa Paula California (15 or so miles inland from the ocean) to Ventura Beach and back. The weather was overcast at the beach all day but sunny as soon as you get about 10 miles from the ocean. Total ride 35-40 miles with only 1000 feet elevation gain. Nice ride for a Sunday morning. I get to ride through some citrus orchards and urban developments and then beach front and harbor for short period . Joe

I haven't been able to ride for the last couple of weeks due to family commitments, which was a shame because I felt like I had gotten myself in shape for summer before that. Like canklecat I was using this past week's rides for acclimation purposes. Thursday I went out for my Davis Is. 26 mile evening ride. It was hot, 90 degrees with heat index of 103. Saturday I went to Upper Tampa Bay trail for 40 miles. Sunday rode to Weedon Is. for another 40 miles. Even though these were both in the morning it was already in the 80's. I drank a lot and doused my head with water. It was pretty bad, but I didn't falter until the last 10 miles and even then I kept it going.

Saturday morning drop ride. Birmingham, AL. 80F and 91% humidity at the 0730 start. Hit 90F by the end of the ride. 48 miles and 7 attack zones. Vicious beatdown that was so much fun! Started to cramp in the last attack zone. Was glad to call it a day after that.

Yes we had the solstice Friday, so Saturday was a nice long day. Went out riding with a buddy ignoring the radar, got drenched in the first 5 miles enroute to a local town, stopped for beverages while the rain passed
Did 25 miles with him before he took off, I had all day and kept riding (and eating!). Close to home at mile 63 I decided to make it a 100 mile day and kept going. Felt good to do! Weather stayed pretty well overcast and around 70°f. Just really nice riding weather.
It's the time of year where there's lots of events and people on our rail trails so I got to meet lots of cool cycling fanatics.
