I guess I will keep riding and make sure my lights are charged up no matter what. i have to leave the house at 0630 to get to work on time light or dark.

I use my lights year round, and can notice them lighting up the ground as the year progresses past the summer solstice.

On the flip side...there's the hundreds of billions of USD in lost productivity that comes along with the inability to keep appointments across timezones and lost sleep especially given international markets...every year over a month the entire world gradually changes clocks on cascading schedules and even our computers have issues keeping them straight.
Which in the days of telegraphs and letters wasn't a thing....but with international conference calls and video chat is a thing.

That's why I like the Split the Difference idea. Humans keep messing with the clock (yes, we need clocks), but we ought to set that clock in between DST and ST, and let us all get used to Sun Time.
Edit: I do still think time zones are important, though. I wouldn't want to have to deal with the calamity of a town 2 counties away being on a different time than where I'm at. Sure could make appointment making a nightmare.

As a side note about safety, I've noticed a few things when the time changes in the fall. This is when the folks who started commuting during the summer suddenly discover that their lights are either inadequate or nonexistent. Or, they've installed some kind of atomic powered lamp on their helmets to blind all oncoming cyclists. And it's too soon for the cold weather to kill them off.
Then there are the joggers. I call them the Madison Ninja Joggers. They are invariably dressed head-to-toe in black, and apparently unaware that the SOUTHWEST COMMUTER PATH is used by commuters.
So, this is a good point to check that your lights still work, and take it nice and slow on the first couple days of darkness.

Some of us live close enough to a line between zones that we already have that problem. But it'd really be tough if every town was on their own sun time; 9:00 here would be 8:58 a few miles east, and 9:03 a few miles west. Now try to schedule a teleconference with three people 300 miles west and 500 miles east.
Maybe I can deal with time zones.
Maybe I can deal with time zones.
Tough is an understatement. Time Zones were established because hyper-local time (solar time) couldn't be synced up even over short distances, resulting in the new Rail Road having many head-on collisions at all hours of day and night....killing many many people.
With computers we could avoid that problem today...but results in the impossible-to-predict business hours. the 9-5 workday at least makes it easy to know when someone will be home in the bank or office.

Jeebus you guys are a bunch of stodgy grumps.
The problem with DST is it doesn't go far enough.
We should have 1-hr DST changes in March and November, and ANOTHER hour changes in May and August.
Benefits:
1. People get used to the changes - more safety.
2. Maintaining even closer to a flat sunset curve.
3. Pisses off stodgy grumps.

With so many people working from home, using flex time or on line we really don't need to worry as much about the time changes as we used to. I think we'd be better off by not changing at all during the year.

How could anyone be so wrong on such a simple matter as you are here? Oh, Washington D.C.! You must be a politician. That would explain it.
When we switch from DST to Standard Time in November, daylight is an hour earlier. It also ends earlier in the afternoon/evening.

California got it backwards. The guy that put forward the proposal didn’t even get it right...now the kids will go to school in the dark. What a clown.

Have a friend in the aviation business. They say that DST is a nightmare because they have to re-time all of their hub flights when the clocks change. Markets that don’t change time lose connection opportunities and then you add in that certain countries change on different days. He says it’s pure hell for scheduling for about two weeks on either end of the change. Airlines want to stay on a standard time with no daylight saving. Politicians now seem to want it the other way around. What a mess.

Agreed. The problem is when they talk about abolishing changing the clocks, they get it backward. They usually want to stay on DST. Eff that. I don’t want the sun up late in the fall. In the summer it will still be light until 730 or so. I hate trying to go to sleep when it’s still light out in the summer. Pain in the rear.

I'm waiting patiently for the "pro-daylight saving time novelty poster" to appear in this thread.
Where is he? Has he given up the cause? Gone over to the dark side, so to speak?
FWIW, I loathe and detest DST. Serves no purpose other than annoying and inconveniencing people, and as an exercise of control.

DST is but one example of mankind's triumph over nature.

And, like so many of our little monkey “triumphs” over nature, it’s not nearly as much of a triumph as we think it is.
