Need suggestions: Perfect frame for Tricolor build?
So I have a great Tricolor STI group and nothing to put it on currently. Thoughts, opinions, on a great frameset for this group aesthetically? Period correct and steel are always better answers.

I'm a miyata nut, so I'd look around for one of their higher end models from late 80s/early 90s. Maybe a 1989 914. I suppose a 1400 would be a better choice. Finding a team miyata frameset for a good price...get real.

I raced the snake skin 916 for a year in the late 90s. Would be fun to find.

I think it fits nicely on a vintage TIG'd frame like my '91 Diamondback Expert TG... Maybe a Centurion? Doesn't narrow options much.

^ Got me thinking there are likely some brightly colored Serottas out there that could look really nice. In fact, this Phinney Serotta is awesome. On eBay at $1,100 with Tricolor.

Sacre Blue! - A Peugeot With Tricolor
Oh la vache!
My 1988 US market Peugeot Biarritz came with a charcoal Shimano 600 Tricolor gruppo. This was the last year before the 600 series morphed into the Ultegra gruppo: 6400 600 Ultegra gruppo.eBay photo - the bike was like new when I got it in 2010. The Nitto Technomics stem and the speedo wiring were the first things to go.
After some tidying up. voilà This is my Goldilocks all time favorite riding and handling bike. The one I'd been looking for since 1975!
je ne sais quoi

I have the same “dilemma” with a tricolor group that came on my Davidson. I’m thinking a bright colored frame with h+son TB14 gray anno rims. Should have kept this pairing on the white Davidson but I’m committed to 9spd Ultegra triple on that. Great combo for upcoming bright red Paramount but I can’t shake idea of DA7400 on that. Time for another bright colored frame purchase!

Just committed to that blue DeBernardi from Look585 across the hall on PL. DeBernardi’s are the bomb. Had a DeBernardi MAX years ago that I sold to...Look585.
Hasn’t been shipped yet.
We share the same size...you can have it if you want it. Would look great with Tricolor.

@alexihnen looks like you got some great answers. Hopefully this will spur you to research further in the quest to find 'the' frame. I will add some suggestions because I love 6400-era 600 and since that goes on '80s and newer race bikes, well, that's my area of interest as well.
I will say that the colors and color combos of the late '80s and into the '90s tend to work really well with that era 600. Makes sense as they came out at the same time. So here's what I'm thinking off the top of my head:
1984/5 and newer Schwinn Paramount. Any color, all day. Killer bike, too.
1984-1985 (red!), 1986 (storm trooper) Schwinn Peloton
1989 Schwinn Tempo, 27.2mm seatpost (only year!) in dark grey, a bit of a junior Prologue but light and very nice.
1987 Schwinn Prologue, very preferably in the black-grey-black combo. Thank me later.
Any Davidson Impulse. Phenomenal bike with minimal graphics, so as to allow the 6400 pieces to be seen.
1985 Allez SE as pictured, if you like, but really. 1986 Allez SE or any steel Allez in that iconic 1986 blue or darker blue. 6400 would look devastating on that with dark grey rims and tan wall tires. I already want (another) one.
Any 1988 or 1989+ (3.0 era Cannondale SR). OMG it's all aluminum, but they look perfect with 6400 and they ride well if you don't set them up like a caveman.
If you can find an upper end Koga Miyata in that black-to-blue color combo they loved to do, that would also be perfect.
A nicer Miyata of that time period that doesn't come in meh colors.
1987-1988 Trek 560 in that sorta-Celeste/teal. 6400 really pops with that (dark grey rims, tan wall tires, drool...)
6400 is a beautiful groupset. Clean design that works with minimal graphics on bikes, but just 'techy' enough looking to work on some more visually involved bikes. Still, I like the 6400 to quietly show itself off, so a non-bonkers frame/wheel/tire combo is best.

Maybe I haven't been paying attention but I've missed your builds and photos. One day I'll have a tricolor group and a bike to go with.

Thanks, @Classtime!
you haven’t missed anything. I’ve been on hiatus. Between my toddler and remodeling our house, I just haven’t had the time for any new bike projects hopefully that will change soon!

I like the Allez and Ironman suggestions above. The group would also be a good match for a Cromor frame- 89 Bianchi CDI comes to mind.

BTW which Trek model is that? I am unfamiliar with orange vintage Treks, unless they are repainted or powder coated.
