brake pads stuck, how to remove

I think the threaded post is stripped bc the nut isn't coming of even though I can force it to turn. Anyone have any idea how to get these pads off? They are hard as rocks and make an ungodly noise when applied. Sound a little bit like Chewbacca.

How well does the rest of that caliper work?

Those look like 50 year old brakes to me (seriously). If it was my bike I'd take my Dremel with a cut off wheel to those brake pad nuts.

Probably the stud is spinning in the pad. I'd remove the wheel and attempt to break the pad off the stud with a pair of vise grips or large pliers. Once that's out of the way you can clamp on to the metal base.

thanks for the advice. I have a dremel I got at a garage sale, hopefully there is a cutting wheel in the box somewhere.

the brakes calipers work fine. they're only 40yrs old...

it's a bad weather bike poorly maintained but keeps on truckin.

should I cut down on the nut as close to the calipers as possible?

Since you aren't interested in saving the pad, you can cut anything that doesn't look like caliper. Once you cutoff a significant chunk of the nut, the rest will probably break off. A hack saw will prob ably work too but be careful to do no harm.

I went with the big pliers method first. Seemed prudent given my inexperience with dremels.

Took some elbow grease but managed to get both off. Looks like there was some metal stuck on one pad, maybe that was source of noise.

Thanks retro grouch and almostrick for your help.
