How difficult is it to swap the inner cage plate?

VERY cool thread, I have NO dog in this hunt, as I have NO derailleurs of this type, but it is a very interesting progression to watch. Just don't put that baby in the spokes...Wouldn't be a fun ride!

It takes me about a minute to swap the entire cage. Just a few minutes longer if you take the tension of the pivot bolt and unbolt the screw the holds the spring under tension. To just swap the inner cage(I'm assuming the small cage that's next to the wheel). That's just a few second with a 8mm socket or wrench. If it's the larger cage that bolts to the rest of the derailleur then go back to the first sentence of this post. lol. I've got some untapped super beefy stainless version that I cut first that I'm probably not going to do anything with. If anyone wants to try one out just cover shipping. PM me if you want one.
I was chatting with a friend from class who works at one of the LBS and I'm always kicking out ideas to him. Last night I thinking of trying to do a crankset. It would multiple layers so the back side could be open and reduce weight.

No one cares
I'm happy to loan you the 38t freewheel I have. I just won't be able to get it set out until April as its in storage until I move.

I installed some of Henry's cages yesterday. Here is a thread that I started about them: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...vo-Rally-cages

Wow, I somehow missed this thread.. Nice work man!
I use Autocad at work and love it. Would you sell or swap me a DXF file for those cages? I would like to make a set for myself.
I think I have some cog and chainring files or I can quickly teach you the geometry if you aren't sure.
I like seeing other peoples nice work but spend enough time standing in front of a mill as it is.

I can do that. Because like someone else mentioned in my "more projects and ideas" thread. What happens after May once I graduate. Well I'll have the file but nowhere to get it cut and will it be worth whatever shop wants to cut them out. I just have to update the file quick but will send you a copy of the file. Is the frankthewelder@comcast good to send the file? The only issue with rings and cogs is that I can't get the bevel or do anything with different levels of thickness on the waterjet unlike a cnc mill or manual mill can do. So I'm limited to just flat items with no contour. Give me a day or two and I'll send you a copy.

That's (if obsentities were allowed there would be quite a few here) awesome. It almost brings a tear to my eye honestly.

I filmed the Campagnolo NR with rally cages, friction shifting through an 11-34t, 9 speed SRAM cassette. Then, I filmed the exact same setup with my Shimano Deore XT "Shadow" RD. With the setups being exactly the same, it makes for a pretty fair comparison between two very, very different rear derailleurs.
The crank is a Sugino AT with 28-36-46 chainrings. The Shimano's massive cage is needed to take up the chain slack on the 28t granny ring.
A few observations I made:
- The Campy RD can do almost everything the Shimano can do. The only thing it can't do is take up all the chain from the 28t granny ring.
- The Shimano RD operates with a much lighter touch.
- As different as they are, they are both very capable.
It's pretty surprising how little of a difference there really is.
These videos were uploaded at a higher resolution than the previous one.

Looks fine to me? It's a quick link, so there really isn't any adjustment. In think it's a combination of, shiny link, bouncing in stand and low resolution. If you watch the top run of chain it seems to be ok.

I'll join the chorus, and say that this is a very cool project. I wonder if they'd work on an old Campy 980 RD I have in the bin?

Just curious if anyone still uses these cages or have them laying around by chance? Since this thread I've moved to Oregon and lost quite a bit in the move and then to Michigan earlier this summer and have one set of cages left. Mind you it's my 2nd version as I made three different versions. The first ones seen here had a bit of an erector toy look to it and I made them a little thinner and went back to stainless. I also made a more curvasious design based off the shape of the SR cage but with the Rally pivot and jockey wheel locations. I know Jim Muller still has his on his Masi GC but lost names of who has a set of these?

I run this on my Campagnolo outfitted '71 Schwinn Super Sport, posing here in front of the local scrap pile at my town's dump.

Pastor B, you got one of the very first set of cages that I made. I made a thinner cage that I'm not sure was tested along with a another just before school ended. I sent Matt a message as he hasn't been on the forum for about two months so see if he's still using one.
Here's the last and only set of cages I have. Stainless with a drillium touch. I have the files still to get more cut but IRD has the nice aluminum cages that look like the original Rally cages so I never bothered to go further with these.

Sorry to dig out this post but I'm impressed with the work... especially as I need a few inner plates.
I was lucky to find a few original Campy outer plates to be fitted onto NR read mechs that will end up on my 1970 Masi Faema and 1973 Gios Brooklyn.
Are you still able to make the aluminum inner plate?

Good thread revival @zidortri -
Even if no one has any plates, you might find someone who has Rally ders for 'Parts'
Get to 10 posts over two days and give lovely pics of your bikes in a new thread(s) - and pose your question or future needs in that thread,
Masi & Gios threads get lots of views.
Alternatively, the upgraded membership (cheap) gives access to C&V Sales threads, where the 'serious' buyers and sellers hang out.
And there is a For Trade/ISO thread, too.

I'd forgotten about this thread. I even have some of @Henry III's first-gen cages here; unfortunately, the threads on the aluminum outer plate didn't survive.

I quickly scrolled through and noted the old timer posters who are no longer around.
I still have one of Henry's under seat bags with the emergency whistle built into the buckle.

I'm still alive! Wow talk about a blast from the past! You know I believe I actually may have a plate or two floating around on my tool wall. Let me check. I actually have some seat bags floating around also I found the other day. Crazy stuff!
