They're a LBS for me too. I haven't been there in awhile, but I do have two fixed non-ebay wheel sets built up from there, and haven't had a problem with either of them. There was a pretty good group of people working there too, I'd buy from them again without hesitation.

sometimes their prices are actually better if you buy from their website than on ebay: https://www.benscycle.net/

I've ordered about 4 sets of Deep-V mountain rims. The first set was delivered within 23 hours or so of my clicking "buy it now". The last set I ordered took about two days. I think they're great. I can't buy the same rims that cheap if I employee purchase them directly from Velocity.

Received my bike from them... they totally forgot to put BRAKES on it. I mean, handlebars were all wrapped and everything. No brakes, no levers, no cables.

The rear wheel was true but way undertensioned. I have since brought it up to proper tension.

They are supposedly PriMailing the brake parts to me now. And this was after I agreed to pay $56 extra for 3 day air in order to get the bike by the weekend because THEY failed to meet the committed ship date.

I like the bike, and everyone has been really nice and apologetic, but this transaction has been rougher'n a cob.

Seems from the posts I've read and the wheelset on the bike I just received from them that yes, undertensioned wheels are a common problem with them.

I went w/ them b/c they were the lowest price i could find-- a truing cost will screw the pooch!
Buying based solely on price is seldom a good idea. If you don't know how to at least evaluate the tension of the wheels you get from them I would strongly recommend taking them to someone who can, and who will true / bring them up to tension for you.

If they are undertensioned and you ride them, you will break spokes.

Point of order:

Ebay user bensbikes (with an S at the end, as in the title of the thread): Some guy with an ebay account.
Ebay user bensbike: Ben's Cycle and Fitness, Milwaukee, WI. Great LBS that does internet sales and sometimes gets swamped and disorganized.

I bought the formula/aerohead wheelset from them and it was shipped ok and everything. BUT this wheel came untrue almost immediately. I took it to my LBS and they said there is no way this was built by hand, although Ben's claims that this particular wheelset is built by hand. SO.. yeah, I'm suspicious. The rest of the stuff I ordered from them was supertastic though.

Well, you can build a wheel by hand and have it be undertensioned and untrue. In fact, that's the way most hand-built wheels are when they're built by hand by people who don't know what they're doing.

It's certainly possible, and I don't wish to call them liars. However, having a wheel built by a guy who doesn't know what he's doing isn't much better than a robot. And I'm just going by what the LBS said. I wouldn't know the difference if you hit me in the face with it.

well they could be machine laced and hand tensioned/trued.
and the hands that tension and true them could be less than skilled.

my bensbike wheels came undertensioned too, but 10 minutes with a spoke wrench fixed that.

Me too, although I was able to get 2 full turns on all the nipples of the rear wheel before I felt they were up to acceptable tension. 2 full turns is a LOT for them to be undertensioned by.

Doesn't really matter to me, because I do know how to build wheels and I always check any wheels I get that have been built by someone else.

It could be a problem for someone who bought wheels expecting to be able to put them on and ride them and not have them self-destruct though.

threadjack:

this is for anyone who has ordered from Ben's cycle through their internet site---do they send you notice when you order actually ships. I placed an order on thursday and got notification that it was recieved--my "account" has been "processing" for four days. I was just wondering whether i should expect an e-mail stating that my product has been shipped.

they sent me an e-mail last time they shipped but that was probably because I had been waiting a few weeks for a nitto stem they had ordered.
