Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mid-teens this morning. I've completed a couple of outdoor activities. I did not Strava them.

All too true. Muscle loss can be held off with regular resistance training and a huge amount of protein in the diet. Neither works alone, in my experience. Subcutaneous fat loss is another cosmetic problem of aging.

I made the mistake of paying attention to something on Trainer Road, instead of sticking with how I got down to this weight - "Feed the workout". It took a couple weeks, but I gained back about 4 lbs. BUT I stayed under 210, so that's still a victory. I don't figure on losing much more weight till outdoor riding season begins again, but I figure if I stay below 210, I'm about 20 lbs ahead come March. I'm still the lightest I've been for an extended period in maybe 20 years.

I did a Zwift ride last night, the Yorkshire UCI course. No big hills, more rolling. Reminded me of riding around here - zooming down a quarter mile hill, pound along the flats, then a climb of under a mile before another fast, but short descent. After Tuesday night's climbing and Wednesday night's TdZ group ride, I thought I'd be dead. In fact the legs felt distinctly tight the first 20 or so minutes, but every time tried to push harder they did what I asked.

I think I've gotten used to not asking enough. Maybe I need more of a plan than "Modified Merckx". My goals are simple - I want to be able to go farther and faster, earlier in the year. For at least the last 8 years, I was afraid of doing the climbs around here, but when I went back to them, they weren't as daunting as I imagined. Now I just have to re-learn how to descend without panicking.

I’m considering real miles tomorrow even though it’ll be 8 degrees at 6:30. Just don’t know if I have another day on the trainer in me.

I finally tried out the treadmill I got the Mrs for Christmas. It’s sort of a PITA in that you have to do this ridiculous fitness test prior to it allowing anything else. But it does have Zwift integration, which is cool.

Tomorrow's forecast:

I'm used to doing a 3 1/2- 4 1/2 hour ride on Sundays. I wonder how long I can stand to ride on Zwift?

If I could get a regular Caledonia frameset vs. the 5 I’d consider it. I’d just need new brifters and swap everything else from the R3 and make that frame a wall hanging.

I’m not really interested in the 5 with all of the integrated cabling nonsense, but then again, things change and with electronic shifting changing cables isn’t really a concern.

Gives you that ropey old man look. Then there's the generalize skin thinning that makes every outdoor chore into a bloodbath. My Dad gardened into his mid 90s. Used to come in with a couple cuts and dried blood on his arms every time. Now that's starting to happen to me. I took off my jersey last week and there was a purple splotch on my baselayer down near the wrist. Turns out there was a little gash there, I think I got it trying to hold the bike one-handed while opening the door from the garage to the kitchen, taking my bike out.

Kudos and keep with it.

Having gone through similar changes a few years back, it's wonderful how perception of terrain can change. There used to be a... well, I wouldn't even call it a hill, but rather an incline (in an otherwise flat, fast stretch) that would, none the less, tax me when taking it at a moderate clip. There was a mailbox with the name "Wagner" at the highest point (I remembered it because that's my SIL's last name) and it was always real work to hold my effort through that point of reference. I stopped riding in that area for a couple years and I lost weight and gained fitness at the same time. The first time getting back over there, the Wagner mailbox was nowhere to be found and, without that landmark, I couldn't find the incline, either.
