After trying to adjust the "toe in" myself and having the shop I bought the bike from do what they could to stop the "Swanking" when I applied the front brakes, I took it to the shop we got my wife's bike from, had them change out to new pads and after a couple of adjustments, they had the V-Brake quite and working great!!! Had them add Orange Sealant to both tubes. Got a new set of rear panniers for upcoming weekender ride!

Swapped out the original Hutchinson Reflex tires (20yo) for a set of Continental Ultra Sports. The new tires ride nice but I kinda liked the yellow pin-stripe on the OEM's....

Well, I recently began night riding and wow, loving it! My original home-brew mount was this, mounted under the stem:
But I wanted to go with a frame-mount, and keep it tucked in enough so that it doesn't bump the cables when turning:

My plan for today is to put the finishing touches on the epic refurbishment of my ‘96 Trek Multitrack 730. Vision for this build is a rock-solid drop bar adventure tourer. I’m waiting for arrival of bar tape and 31.8 IRD FD clamp. I’ll post details and photos in the Trek Multitrack thread.

My 1995 Trek 730 Multitrack just got new shifter cables and housings. The ones I removed were the factory originals.
This was my first time getting inside the Grip Shift shifters, so that was educational for me.

I referred to an RJ The Bike Guy video that covered most of it pretty well. He was working on SRT600 shifters, and mine are SRT400. The cable routing is the same, but the cover comes off differently on these two models, and it took me a bit to noodle it out. I'm always at least a little bit uncomfortable taking apart assemblies that involve plastic components that "snap" together, but these came apart and went together fairly smoothly.
A dealer technical manual from 1999 had some recommendations for lubrication.
I rode the bike today, and I'm happy with the results.

For some reason I don't think GripShift expected those shifters to survive 26 years. I had some SRT600's that I promptly traded for some Suntour XC Pro 8 speed shifters on my 1995 Kona Kilauea. Never missed those grip shifters for one second.

Installed some Bontrager Crivitz handlebars. They're pretty hard to find but I eventually found out Trek still has them in stock so I ordered them through my local dealer. I don't think they were produced that long. They were the stock bars on the Trek 1120 Bikepacking bike. I don't have too many miles on them yet but the test rides around the neighborhood seem to indicate I made a good choice. There is a lot more sweep to them than with the stock bars that came on my FX. I'm experiencing a lot less wrist trauma. This is just a stock photo I got off the net.

My buddy just put on a set of Jones Bars on his FX. We've only been texting and I haven't had a chance to ride with him yet so that we can compare notes. With the Jones Bars you may need to be looking into longer grips is you want to take advantage of the full cut of the bars. For the record I'm using Lizard Skin NorthShore grips on mine. Since I don't really have more than a couple of miles on them I'm sure there will be some tweaking before everything settles in.

Replaced derailleur cable and housing. Shifting on my previous ride was noticeably mushy, and I know from past experience that this is a good sign that the derailleur cable is on its way out at the shifter end. Opened up my brifter and sure enough the strands of the cable had started fraying. Probably wouldn't have broken right away, but likely within a couple of hundred kilometres at most. Shifting is much smoother now, of course.
Already had >4000km on the cable, so it's not like it failed early.

This past weekend, converted to a 1x11. 34 tooth chainring with a 11-42 cassette. Rode it for 40 miles and am very happy with this.
Today received my new SQ lab alum 16 degree bar. Took it for a quick spin in the neighborhood and wow am really impressed so far. Looking forward to testing out this weekend.

When the bike was original, it really was the same bike as the Crosstrail. The big difference and reason I bought this Sub Cross 1 1/2 years ago is that it's my proper size. The Crosstrail was sized medium and did various things with extending the seat post and handlebar stem to make me comfortable. I had tested large Crosstrails at the time along with other bikes like the Trek DS and felt too stretched out on those bikes. So various LBS were telling me sized medium for me.
The Scott Sub Cross size large though, I was not stretched out and am so very much more comfortable on than the Crosstrail. Fortunately I bought the Sub Cross a little over a month before the pandemic hit. So at a bit over $500 U.S. I got a good deal since bike shops were trying to get old inventory sold. This was a 2018 model that several bike shops were not able to sell. I put in some upgrades and have a bike I'm really enjoying now.
I might even be changing the color of the decals soon since I'm getting tired of black and red. I had ordered Scott decals in copper color and will see if that looks better.

I went "back in time" and installed a wired computer. I just couldn't come up with a solution to my headlight and the wireless not working with each other...

A number of months later, when I decided that I wanted to be able to measure cadence, I went with a Bontrager RIDETime Elite. It is still a fairly simple cyclocomputer - no GPS, no logging of granular data, runs off of a coin cell battery - but it works with ANT+ sensors. Communication with the sensors has been utterly reliable.
