74' Motobecane Grand Jubilee

I've had this stored in the back of a dry shed since it was pulled out of the bushes at an estate sale. With enough projects to hold me off, I tried to move it to another worthy rider. Being a 63cm, it's just out of my comfort range and his also. Well, it's out, so I figured I should at least see what it rode like. After a clean, lube and a few parts, here it is.

And the finished product.

Nice bike. Did you switch saddles for the last pic? The "as found" bike looks to have the aluminum-railed Ideale on it, which is a pretty sought-after and racy version.

I have one of these, and they sure are pretty. How did you like the ride? For some reason the ride of mine never felt as good to me as other "3 tubes 531" frames like the Raleigh Super Course. I put 700c wheels with bigger tires on mine, and I use it as sort of a "picnic randonneur" bike--- a bike for slow rides with the family. In that role it's just nice to look at....

For some reason I could never get the much ballyhooed Huret Jubilee deralleur to shift very well.... but maybe that's missing the point, which is to be light and look pretty.....

Yes, I changed to an older Ideal 90 I had. Seemed to fit the rest of the patina on the bike. I ride 58/60 so, taking that into account, I was impressed with the ride. My first time using this Huret group. Other than taking a lot of cable to get up to the last cog, it shifted flawlessly. If I was going to keep it I would address the wheels. They are showing their age. The front rim has been changed to an Araya at some point. Originally sold on Stanyan in SF and then resold at the Schwinn in El Sobrante.

Those pedals took some muscle to get off. I'm guessing the Schwinn shop took it on trade and did any changes since the bike was found in Richmond. Yes, Brent Harris had given me a heads up on that 90-I. The bike had come with a mattress seat.

thank you,

the Sealy Posturpedic selle & pedali sound like very plausible perpetrations courtesy of the Arnie Emporio...

test rode the '74 at launch

dearly wanted to get one but fell twixt the cracks on the size regime; the LIV c-t-t was a bit small and the LVIII a bit large...
