Without knowing the serial, I wouldn't be so fast to say the year.

There's a lot written on this site on the Carlton Cappella "cock and balls" lugs. In short, they were leftover stock from Raleigh buying Carlton. The lugs were used to clear stock from late 1970 up to about 1975. The black competition was about the only color that endured through that time frame. While they were dominantly used in 1972-73, the serial number is the best indicator of year vis-a-vis Sheldon Brown's or Kurt Kaminer's websites. So, this frame could be a late 1975 production, but it's likely earlier.

My identical Competition which I am near certain is a '73 had the same fork crown also. I'll bet my lunch your rear dropouts are Huret like mine. (I don't bid higher than lunch for anything Raleigh bike-boom.)

Pre-1974 production year, so produced before late 1973. 1972-73 makes sense vis-a-vis comments above.

wow. I've rescued 2 of these in my size over the years, and looked at a few more in the wrong size, and i've never seen a frame this well preserved, let alone still in the original build. bike boom sloppy randomness maybe, but there's something that makes these frames the right kind of oddball.

does this one have the "rapid taper" chainstays, or are they crimped on the inside? trying to work out if there's a knowable pattern to that particular feature...

I have a 73 frameset similar to this one, and it has the rapid taper chainstays. You can see this in pictures 8 & 9 in the second post above -- the transition happens right at the chainstay bridge.
