Crankset/Cassette Compatibility?

Will an Ultegra 53-39T, 11 spd crank work with a Shimano 8-spd cassette? We're keeping the same Shimano FD. My friend's bike has an off-name cheap square-drive crankset and BB that's being replaced with the aforementioned crankset, external threaded BB, and new 8-spd chain. Thanks for your help!

It should work fine. Shimano 11 speed doubles actually have more space between the chainrings (7.9mm) than their 8 speed doubles (7.6 - 7.7mm). I've had smoother shifting using a 9 speed chain on mixed drivetrains with 8 speed cassettes.

Bikes: too many sparkly Italians, some sweet Americans and a couple interesting Japanese

Agree, you should not have any problem as the chainring teeth have the same dimensions because the chains have the same inside dimension but if you have got a caliper you can double check.

Is that smoother shifting on the FD or RD or both using the 9 speed chain?
