Early 80s Lotus Odyssey 21.1mm Stem Issue
Hello,
I recently found an early Lotus Odyssey frame and when I tried to install a stem I realized that 22.2 standard quill stem doesn't fit. I purchased a 21.1mm SR stem from eBay and it fits, but there is a gap in between the headset lock ring and the stem. I believe the stem is original to the bike - so why the gap? It looks like these SR stems have a 21.1mm diameter at the bottom and towards the top they flare out to 22.2mm. Were they supposed to be slammed down to the 22.2mm area (thus filling the gap)? The stem would seem awfully low if this was the case.
Does anyone know if there is a different stem that would better fit with the current headset?
Or could I just buy a new lock ring with a 21.1mm opening?
Thanks for any help you can provide!

The original headset would've had the lockring's ID barely larger than 21.1 mm. Some might also have a rubber seal that could be more forgiving.
I don't know if you'll be able to find a 600 lockring in that size... You may need to find a better matching complete headset if you can't live with the gap.
That's probably the best conventional quill stem ever made in 21.1 mm. SR also made these in 22.2 mm - I have had 2 identical ones in use for years now. They look a little better because the stepdown isn't as severe.
