How can a $14,000 bicycle possibly be worth the money?

If you really consider it...
I ride a bike that cost $2,250. It's reliable, relatively fast, rides right next to the other bikes that cost 2-3x. Costs less to maintain, consumable parts last longer...
A complete, functional bike for less than the cost of another bikes groupset. He has a point about functionality.
Don't get me wrong, if I had the budget a Time Scylon would be sitting in my garage - but would it be 4x better than what I'm currently riding? Would I want to ride that bike in the winter with salty roads, would I want to ride that bike along the beach with blowing sand and salt, would I want to ride that bike on the occasional gravel section where a rock could damage a frame worth 5k? No.

This is your money's worth, your value judgement. If someone buys an expensive bike and is happy just to have it and ride around the park once in a while that makes them stupid?
You can't accept that others may have a different value system than you do? Really?

Another factor you may have overlooked...Some people are excited to own and enjoy riding a pinnacle machine, and have the financial means to do so. It's not always about a quantifiable performance improvement.

I recently wrote this in another thread, in response to another poster, but it bears repeating: the inability to accept that your own preferences and values are not universal is a rather juvenile fallacy.

Like, say, gears, so you can climb without your knees exploding.

As I posted, I'm sure geometry has something to do with it. But when I stand next to my Landshark and push down on the pedal and the whole frame BENDS away from me, that's not the geometry. Try the same thing on my Tesch and the frame does not budge, the only thing that deflects is the wheels.
If I can deflect the frame inches by pushing it laterally, maybe there is a bit of that going on in the vertical plane, as well.

There is the old joke about the wife selling her late husband’s bicycles for what he told her that he had paid for them.

I can't keep from laughing at someone who can't understand that some people have different preferences and different budgets than he has. Are you twelve years old?

Great motorcycle. The Honda Cub line is the most popular motorcycle that has ever been built. It’s current price is comparable to its introductory price in 1958, inflation and additional equipment taken into account.

I looked up my cadence, with a 36x32, on a couple climbs on my usual Sunday route - which I don't think of as the hilly ride: 81. Okay, that's with a 1.2:1 gear ratio. With a typical single speed road ratio of 2.5-2.7:1, it would be 35-40 rpm to climb at the same speed. For half a mile at a time. Doesn't sound very knee-friendly. No thanks.
I suppose I could go with a lower ratio, but then when I go back down the same climb later, I'll spin out at about 22 mph. Bleah.

I don’t care that much. I’m not losing any sleep over it. I benefitted for many years when people payed what I asked without negotiating or shopping for alternatives. I did learn not to do it myself.
I feel the same way about every product from every industry.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
