Just built a set of wheels with well used hubs and rims using USA Brand spokes from PorkchopBMX. Cut to order straight guage SS at $0.38. Easy build and tensioning with new DT nipples. This wheelset didn't require my usual DT Comps.

I experienced the same with a pair of Sun rims. Website makes it appear they're "in stock," when they really just place an order that then needs to travel to them before being shipped to you.

My butt may not be tuned enough to really know, however, I prefer double butted spokes. Frank Berto had commented that he thought double butted spoke may be more important than double butted frame tubes.

Double buttted spokes are not much more money. One other thing that I go by is that if you are doing the work yourself, get the good stuff.

100%. Building wheels is not something I particularly enjoy doing, so if I'm going to put the work and time into building a set up, they should be nice!

I've re-used straight gauge 2.0 spokes before but never noticed how heavy they are. But when I recieved my recent order of new ones, I noticed. But for the already quite heavy PA-10E, they are fine and only 38 cents vs. 99 cents and cut to the nearest mm.

The last time I bought spokes to build a set a wheels, I purchased my spokes from Peter White Cycles. A true Classic & Vintage vendor, with just the right amount of retrogrouchiness, Everything went smoothly, and I was able to get the exact number of spokes in a mix of flavors and sizes for front/rear and DS/NDS. He also had some Wheelsmith spokes in stock when I made my purchase.

I get spokes from Universal Cycles. They currently seem to have lots of DT Competition DB in many sizes, a few DT Revolutions (thinned centers than Comps), some Sapim, and very few Wheelsmith:

I've ordered Wheelsmith spokes from Universal Cycles a few times over the last 2 years. I'd also just generally recommend checking with full-service LBS...I know a few places around me still have good stocks of Wheelsmith DB14 spokes, and that's how I'll stock up for the next couple projects.

Porkchop BMX has custom length USA made stainless steel 14ga spokes for 36 cents a pop.

I used them a few months back to build up a 20" 48h wheelset for a BMX build I'm working on.

They also have custom length 14ga colored spokes, they run anywhere from 32 cents to 75 cents each.

Nipples sold separately.

One of my favorite bike build memories: I walked into Spokes, Etc in Fairfax VA ( a full service LBS) and said " I need to buy some spokes".. The whole staff broke into laughter and someone said "you came to the right place, bro". They've since been assimilated by The Borg/Trek.

Haven't ordered from him in a couple years, but used to deal regularly with a guy who sells on eBay as childhood_dreams (yes, a weird name for bicycle spokes).
He's an old school old guy who used to stock only Sapims and has the cutting and thread rolling machines to give you exactly what your build requires (mixed length orders are no problem). But nowadays he seems to be selling "unbranded" USA made stainless spokes, still cuts them as you specify (so do the calculations carefully and re-check 3X before you order, he's never screwed up my order, but I have!)
For example: double-butted silver stainless spokes (2.0 mm butts with 1.8mm center) with choice of silver or black brass nipples (in either 12 or 14mm) cut to any size from 300 to 170 mm comes to about $1.05 each.
Sure that's not the 38 cents straight-gauge deal from Porkchop BMX but...not bad IMO.

EDIT: checking the current ad for PorkchopBMX the "Richman" stainless spokes they are currently offering (cut to your specs and with NO nipples) for 36 cents plus tax are made in Taiwan, not USA.
Probably fine quality spokes but Taiwan isn't USA (not yet, anyhow).

They list both but the Made in USA spokes are 45 cents.

Another thumbs up for bikehubstore.com here. I buy all my spokes from them and I have never had a bad experience.

I got in just in time for the $0.38.

They don’t have the Shiny of DT Comps but 38-45 cents FTW.

304mm was my mistake. I had to back for 299mm.

Regarding rosebikes.com (not .de!): I ordered two wheel's worth of DT swiss 2.0 spokes in November and paid 19c a pop, plus 2.00 Euro for 40 nipples.
not to mention a couple 26" rims of decent quality for 20 euros each.

Now i find that Rose does not offer DT Swiss anything for U.S. customers.

The German side of the business still sells the spokes, but does not ship to the U.S.

It is hard to understand why spokes have to be so expensive.

Also, VAT was not charged, contrary to a post further up in the thread.

cheers -mathias

Another vote for Universal Cycles like @Dfrost suggested. I've run spoke setups like him on a few of my bikes, and the lighter Competitions and further lighter Revolutions really help cut the gram count on a 32-hole wheel build. I just picked up some straight gauge Champions for a build after really enjoying the ride on a set of 36-hole 7400/MA40 wheels with such spokes. And this on a vintage race Cannondale (guess I don't know anything anymore! ). Universal has good prices and timely shipping; and they ship from three available warehouses around the country.

Almost forgot singlespeedshop.com for Hoshis.
Only in bags of 100 unfortunately and limited lengths but €30, brass nipples included.

Follow up- received my wheelbuildingparts.com spoke order this AM. Laced up the wheels, lengths and threads all good. Only 'error' in the order is they sent two more nipples than I ordered. Second (possibly 3rd...) time I've ordered from them and everything has been fine (and the price has been good). YMMV, of course.
