Shimano 572 crankset removal help

I pulled my old 2001 Klein Attitude out of storage. Getting back into trail riding. Wonderful bike! It has a Shimano LX 572 octalink crank. I would like to remove the crank for grease and cleaning. After looking online not much can be found on how to do this.
I am fairly familiar with octalink. I have it on a few road bikes.
The specific question is if this crank is self extracting? The donut shaped dust caps have me concerned.
Thank you!

Take the chain off, then take take the crank arm off the other side. Make certain the FD is out of the way and pull the right crank, rings and spindle out. They are all essentially one piece. You might have to rap lightly on the other side, but be carefull. Use a rubber mallet or a soft piece of 2x4.

Shouldn't need a extractor for the left crank, but it might need some prying with something that won't damage the finish.

Well maybe I'm wrong. I saw hollowtech and went for the common hollowtech crank of today. Let me look it up.

Here you go.... https://si.shimano.com/en/pdfs/ev/FC...M572-2188A.pdf

I think they should be self extracting crank arms. So just find the hex key that fits the smaller hex socket and unscrew it and the arms will pull themselves off it the caps aren't removed. If those caps don't have a larger hex for them or some holes for a pin spanner, then they might not be self-extracting.

The name "Hollowtech" is a good clue. Google that and you'll see a few videos.

To me, that looks like a plastic dust cap.
So once the bolt is unscrewed, it might just push the cap out too (if they are self-extracting, they will get pushed off, of course).
And then one could use a crank puller tool to help remove the cranks.

Hollowtech is actually a reference to the hollow nature of the crank arms in this case. The arms are not the external B.B. style cranks which we sometimes refer to as Hollowtech II which generally are all that external B.B. style of crank but I don't think is necessarily specifically referencing that.

In terms of removal I believe you remove the bolt and use the proper crank pulling tool. to pull it similar to a square taper crank I believe some of the stuff had self extracting bolts but I do not believe those did but I could be mistaken.

8mm hex wrench and a Park tool CCP-44 crank puller, or equivalent tool. The puller also works with ISIS/Gigapipe cranksets too.

the Bottom Bracket is most likely an Octalink V2.. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE between a V1 and V2,or suffer the consequences.

some of us have improvised and used the perfect washers to make a sq. taper crank puller work, but those washers are scarce...

and i've heard you can also use a slightly modified Dime (remove the serrated edge with a file or grinder.), but that's illegal, so i would Never do that....the dimes are less expensive than the washers, btw.

@ 17.6mm OD will usually fit (as just measured on a Hussefelt DH crankarm)........ clean and lube the threads in the crank arm before fighting to put the puller completely in place....

OR get the CCP-44.
