"Chrome Dome" Skull Caps
Anyone have experience with the Chrome Dome brand of skull cap? Before I plunk down $30 for a skull cap, I'm hoping to get some feedback first.
Reasons I'm interested specifically in the Chrome Dome skull cap:
Reasons I'm interested specifically in the Chrome Dome skull cap:
- Sizes: I apparently have a large noggin' and I know for sure that the "one size fits all" do not. Chrome Domes come in sizes. Yippee.
- Over the Ear: I've found that having fabric over my ears not only protects from the sun but also reduces wind noise. Win.
- Bug Protection: Sweatbands don't cover the top of my head which becomes a problem when mc'-nasty biting wasps and the like get sucked into my helmet and hang-out in my hair.
- Sweat: My head likes to sweat a lot and I need something to keep sweat out of my eyes and glasses.

I just use some cheap Coolmax caps from Amazon. I have a few of the more expensive name brands, they pretty much function the same. I don't want over the ear, so all I need it to do is keep the sun off my bald head. Nothing works great for sweat control, a sweat band is as good as a skull cap. If I know it's going to be a hot day, I bring a spare and swap out when the sweat is getting into my eyes.

I tried other brands but Headsweats works for me. I use their Do Tag Skull caps under helmets with large vents to keep from getting tiger stripe tans or burns. I just got a Trek Circuit Wavecell helmets and use the Headsweats head band. So far today at 90 F today it worked.

I wear very thin skull caps for sweat management, but could not imagine wearing even the thinnest ones over my ears in warm weather. But I have not worn white ones, so maybe the white reflecting the sun makes for a net cooling effect.
I used to just use thin sweat bands, but my hair started doing really weird things and then I figured out the sweat band was pushing my hair up into odd shapes and my hair was "learning" this. So, a skull cap works more like a do-rag keeping my hair from being distorted. But still sweat control is why I use it at all.

I'm not familiar with Chrome Dome. I've been using Halo brand for a number of years now and the silicone "dam" in the head band portion keeps sweat out of the eyes. They have summer and cold weather skull caps also. Good company to deal with and have a lot of different head products and color schemes.

I buy whatever skull cap that happens to have a good price when I need one. To me they're generic and little to distinguish one brand from another.
Aside from protecting my very thinly-haired head, they greatly reduce the grunge, pretty much eliminate in the helmet pads. As for stinky and dirty? Never experienced, but then again, I have several and at least rinse or wash them after use. Kind of like the other bike clothes. Maybe the stinky ones don't get cleaned? I have several colors they all seem to function the same, although I tend to default to white.
One thing I wish I could find (maybe someone will have a pointer): I would like to have skull caps with a flap in back that would cover the back of my neck. I'm not talking about the little rat tail that "do-rag" type have, but something larger that would tend to drape down the back of my neck to the collar of the jersey. The most burn or damage prone part of my skin when I'm riding the road bike, and a very common locus for skin cancer.

Scalp protection is extremely important.
I've seen scalp skin cancer....
Guy died 30 days after diagnosis.

I now ride with an aero helmet, not because I care about the "aero" part, but because there are no vents on the top of the helmet so I don't have to worry about burning my noggin' on long rides.

They look like they are made of thicker material than Halo's or SweatVac's. But might just be the picture. My sweatVac is made of thin material similar to my jersey. I'd worry that thicker material is just keeping the heat in. But maybe it's not. But I'd have to let someone else pay for that and convince me otherwise.
