I've never set up a Shadow derailleur and was wondering what the cable routing was around the cable clamp bolt. Pictures show it with both over the top and underneath. Can almost get it to work on top but it wants to skip some gears or hesitates going down. Using it for a 105 10 speed drive. Thanks for any other insight.

Are you certain the cable isn't on the wrong side of the pinch bolt?

It also might be that the cable housing is too long. I'd try to get rid of the bump where it comes out of the stop on the chain stay. But wait and see what others say about that before you go to cutting it.

And something just looks odd about how it's hanging from where it's attached to the dropout. Again, see what others say about that.

A picture with it in the big/big and the small/small might be useful. You did check the hangar wasn't ever so slightly bent?

If you're using 105 shifters, 10 speed is where they get incompatible. Road shifters require road ders and mtb shifters mtb ders. You'll need this https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/products/tanpan to work with the mtb rear der and road shifter.

A better, close up picture of the pinch bolt would help. Here is Shimano’s tech doc:

https://si.shimano.com/en/manual/sea...&model=RD-M772

I think I have one of these on a bike but it’s not in front of me. I’ll try to check mine later.

Pretty sure this is a 9 speed derailleur, which is compatible with 10 speed road shifters.

Here is mine. Note the cable is routed to the right of the bolt. It appears yours is on the left.

That's the ticket. Thanks. Yes, 9 speed and I do have it routed wrong.

If ever you're not sure, remove the bolt and washer and look for the groove the cable should locate in. You'll not always be able to tell, particularly if the cable has been fitted in the wrong position and formed its own groove, but often it's a clear indication of cable routing.

So just a final update. This derailleur came off a 9 speed mountain bike running a 11/34. It was having issues before I replaced it so I just figured something wasn't compatible. On this recent setup it was catching gears but would not shift down without a double click. Getting ready to replace it with an older xt I noticed the B screw was turned in pretty far. I backed it out almost all the way and now it hits shifts like advertised.
