Raleigh Competition info
Hey, seen an unidentified Raleigh Competition at around 50 bucks, i like the look of it and saw a lot of good said about Raleigh competitions. For now i have just one picture, i have contacted the seller. How big of a hassle would it be to get this up and running, and is it worth it? I wouldnt be too wound up on restoring it to original parts or anything like that at all, just want a nice bike to ride.
Any tips? I'm a beginner but greatly interested in this world.
I wasnt allowed to attach an image or a link apparently, account too new. if someone knows about these let me know how i can try and show it.
The bike is off white, "Competition" text has a more handwritten font and i havent found a near match on google yet as far as the logos on it go.

back in the boom era there were a few white ones done with the Gran Sport livery of white with Lagoon Blue panels
at first glance its easy to think one is looking at a Gran Sport
they show a gold Competition script transfer on the top tube

That is unlike any Competition I have seen. Maybe it is a model that wasn’t widely sold in the US. I can’t speak to how good of a ride or the quality . To get this in good working shape it will need complete disassembly with cleaning , greasing , and reassembly . The cables , tires , chain , seat post (incomplete) ,seat, pedals , bar tape , brake pads , are in need of replacement. This is based on one non-drive side photo , I can’t see the derailleurs or chain rings , or even the freewheel. It could be a nice riding bike for you but it is going to need some work and cash to get it on the road in decent riding shape. I would look for a complete bike that has been maintained .

Yeah, have to agree with Kabuki12 , for a C&V ‘beginner’, you’d probably be better off starting with a complete bike. There can be some subtleties about what will work with what, and until one has built up a bit of a personal ‘knowledge base’ things can get frustrating trying to find the right parts (though the collective knowledge base here can be immensely helpful). Though I’ll say that if that bike were near me and my size I would definitely check it out.

Very reasonable takes, thank you for the clarity. This is in Finland so it could very well be something that wasnt widely available in the US. But you guys are right, it is probably too big of a leap for me to get into at this point. But hey, if there are any Raleigh enthusiasts from out here reading, this is available on a finnish online second hand site im sure you'll find it. Appreciate everyone for responding, great community

50 bucks! You could buy it and play with it while you look for a complete bike. The seatpost might be stuck and it is missing pedals and a saddle. In my experience, bikes that look like this can be made nice riders without replacing more than tires, tubes, and bar tape.
