Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It’s hard to tell from the photo, but that washout was deep.

I’m reading a book on heart health. Better late than never. I was shocked to read that eaten cholesterol has very little effect on blood cholesterol! That visceral fat is a much bigger contributor. All these years they’ve been lying to us. What else are they lying about?

Woah, KRS-One at the Whiskey! We listened to a LOT of KRS-One and BDP back in the 90s.

Or not. "They" keep waffling on that, and some days, I think "they" think waffles are better than anything for you. Body positivity and all that ****.

Mmmm waffles. I'm craving a ham and Swiss and pear waffle. There was a waffle window out front of one of the old Social Clubs in Portland that had the best savory waffles! It was kinda sad to go there because it was post gentrification and I missed the good ol days when the bar was Joe's Place - Home of the Louisiana Social Club. Post-gentrification they changed the name to Nest. Not The Nest, just Nest.

I can't remember if Joe's outlasted the other last remaining social clubs in Portland, the Cleo-Lillian Social Club. That place was awesome. The door was always locked from the outside and you had to stand there til the bartender deemed you were worthy of admittance and buzzed you in.

Gonna have to dig to see if there are any long-form articles on the ol Cleo Lillian when I get a chance...

MIL just asked to stay at our house a couple nights while Liz and baby are in Amsterdam with family. Guess she had some business in town. I managed to get her out of here by only 10 minutes after our agreed upon time. I had to ask her to stop cleaning and help her pack her items up to make it happen, but hey that's progress.

You know Lockwood Valley road. Friends went up there yesterday (I wussed out) and this is that low point before the climb to Heartbreak Hill.

If I could only stand the taste of eggs. My dad had the same issue. I can eat them smothered in black beans. Or fried to smithereens on a sandwich with lots of mustard

Some time ago there was storm damage at a different spot and they didn't repair it for years. Seems the counties were fighting over who was responsible for the repair. Ventura county said they didn't want it anymore and they thought Kern county should take it and fix it. Kern county wanted to get L.A. county involved, L.A. county line is just down the road.
