I like in the one letter his son worried about a bike getting hit on a rear rack and only using a roof rack.
I'd venture more bikes get damaged from low clearance on a roof rack than rear ended on a hitch mount.

"Cyclomuting" (on the cover) sounds like putting a bike on mute. I do like a quiet bike, sign me up!

I was alarmed to read the Teledyne track frame weighs 11-1/2 lb. Strange, when their road frames weighed more like 3-1/2 lb. Must be very stiff!

Could we see the article(s) on track racing, by Owen Mulholland?
His articles were typically some of the better material in this era of Bicycling.

thanks!

Wow, fat tires on fast bikes, titanium parts, disc brakes, all back in 1974. What's old is new again, LOL!

I've never watched a track race in person, but I do enjoy watching the World Championships or Olympics for track racing on youtube. Very cool, and so much different from watching a multi-hour stage of the TdF!

Kissena has quite the storied history but it clearly isn't the track of 50 years ago. Probably the best thing going for it is the Jrs program which is top notch and would have matched the Jrs racing from this publication's time. There's still some decent racing though attendance can be quite spotty, and the track itself is in rough shape. Should be completely resurfaced and flattened but NYC is too cheap to bother doing so. They've got chariot races there this Sat, if the new bike shows I'll possibly attend but I'm looking for something more intensive.

It was repaved about 3 years ago IIRC. I'm sure weeds are poking through again by now. I heard they were going to build bathrooms there, but I haven't been by in a while. It sure was nice 60 years ago, fresh for the Olympics.

It wasn't a repave, they filled the cracks with some tar like stuff, replaced a small section on turn 3 and coated it. I was one of the people who cut the grass back to the wooden inner shoulder where the pavement starts. It made it look better and did make turn 3 a bit better, but it didn't do a lot to the track overall. Mostly just nice it isn't being completely neglected. And that wasn't NYC that had that done, my understanding there is that it was a dedicated group who raised the funding and paid to have it done, that part didn't involve me, just track prep.
