I have really gotten into racing and my cheapo nashbar imitation look pedals are horrible. They are very creaky and they have never been a smooth in and out that other pedals I have ridden have been. I was going to get some speedplays to fix knee problems but I seem to have fixed my problem by getting a fit done at my LBS. Would it still be a good idea to get speedplays? I hear that the speedplays help a lot with pedaling as well in that they force you to be more smooth. Is this true? My second choice would probably be crank brothers egg beaters as our team is sponsored by them and I can get them for around 50$ (maybe quatros but I have never heard much about those). The only other option I cna think of would be look keo pedals although I like the idea of having a multiple sided entry. I cannot find an LBS that will let me test these pedals cause they claim I will scar the cleat and pedal up...understandable. I am just wondering the best method to find which pedal I should purchase. Any advice is welcome! I would really like to get new pedals within the next week.

I have the Speedplay X5's. They are fantastic. I was recommended by my LBS to use them since I've had 2 knee surgerys. I've tried using the Look's that my brother in law has and I also have a friend who had some imitation ones and ended up having to purchase other pedals. I highly recommend the X5's. One of the best investments I've made on my bike.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will pick up a pair tomorrow. My LBS has the X5's for 115$ which is just as good as performance. My only gripe is the blue color...it will definately not match the red/white/black frame I am going to be purchasing. ...My only major question would be why the X5s and not the newer zeros?

Once you clip in you won't see the blue so that won't even be an issue. At least for me it's not. I never tried the Zero's but I heard they don't have any float. In my case I needed it.

Personally, I think the Look 247's are a pretty damn good value. I think they have 6 degrees of float and are pretty light. 320 or 340 g I think. Check Performance, it is normally one of the items they have on sale. Not as much clearance as a speed play though.

definitely not true.
fixed is an option on the Zero's, but you can also adjust it up to 15 degrees float.

i have the X2's.....damn i love those pedals. and from my experience, they have made my pedal stroke smoother. it made some of the smaller muscles in my legs/ankles/feet adjust to the no float. plus they help my knees.

Sidi Zeta for me ... 45's. Great shoe, very comfortable.

+1, i have these same shoes, but i have the X-2s, not the X-5's. a little more expensive, but worth it in the long run (durability of stainless steel).

I'm running the eggbeaters, and really like them. I find them to be a lot easier on my knees than the spds I used to use, and multi-sided entry is pretty useful.

either the 105 or ultegra pedal at probikekit.com. both are very affordable through them and work nicely. i like the spd-sl cleat far better than the look style.

I tried those same Shimano shoes at the LBS, but the Sidis were a much better fit for my foot.

I ended up getting some of the X5's. The only problem now is that my adidas girano shoes are not stiff at all and I can feel those cleats at all times. I did a crit on saturday and after 40 minutes of intense riding my feet were toast. I am going to my LBS tomorrow to check out some shimanos and I also wanna try some sidis as well.

I got quattros a week ago and have about a hundred miles on them and I love them. Really easy to get in and out of. As far as shoes I have diadora cosmos.
