Boonen to go for maillot jaune?

This is interesting. Ever since Tom emerged as a top rider I've thought that he could someday transform himself into a top GC rider in the way that Indurain was (i.e., superb time trialist, strong enough on the climbs to get the job done), but I never actually thought that anyone else believed it too. Apparently Boonen does:

Still, Boonen is looking forward to the Grand Tour. "In Belgium, everyone expects me to win in the Tour," he added. "I'm fast, that's the weapon I do have. So I'll use it. One day I'll have enough of the Tour for sure, but at the moment I just can't pull back."

"win in the Tour", not "Win the Tour". One doesn't have to win yellow to win.

Yes; he and all of Belgium are referring to the coveted Green (points) Jersey.

Tom would have to make some massive changes to be effective in the mountains I feel and become a GC contender in the Grand Tours...to the point that it would take away what he's naturally gifted at - killer sprinting and Classics domination.

In this article, he specifically says he doesn't have any interest in trying to be a GC contender:

Ah, I misread it. I didn't see the 'in'.

Sorry for the ignorance but does "GC" stand for. I've seen it quite a few times. Thanks.

GC = general clasification. It's the overall race lead, marked by the Yellow Jersey, and measured by the lowest accumulated time. Commonly referred to as the race winner.

Thank you. I would have never figured it out.

Ya, but like baseball where the pitcher gets credit for a win, cycling is the same with the GC winner, still a team sport.........many seem to forget this.

The only chance Tom has at getting the yellow jersey for a day or two is to win the opening prologue..... or go an a winning break in the first stage or two to gain time on the field.

Highly unlikely ot see Tom in yellow..... Green? You better believe it!

Bull...the prologue is only 7km long...how much time could Tom lose? (or anyone else for that matter!). All Boonen needs to do to be in yellow is not get 'smashed' in the prologue, then set about winning most of the next 6 stages (if he can knock over Robbie)...theres no serious hills until stage 10...,but the ITT in stage 7 won't favour him, but if Tom is in any sort of form at all, I'd be surprised if he doesn't wear yellow in the 1st week

This is spot on.

With time bonuses for stage wins, Boonen has a realistic shot to leap-frog his way up to the yellow jersey in the first week and has stated his desire to do so. He's also stated that he is not a GC contender, but his goal is the green jersey.

Hope there are some great finishes between Tom, Robbie, Thor, Zabel, et. al. Just wake me up with 15km to go as the peloton catches the early breakaway in each of the first week's stages....
