Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Were these supported rides? i.e. a car drove near by to give you fuel.

Any stops?

I can't imagine doing a 4 hour century solo, flat or not. My goal is 5 hours.

Was there support on these rides (i.e. a car that delivered fuel to the rider)?

Sub 5 hours is a real effort for me. Anyone doing sub-4 should be riding for living IMO.

Me too. At the Quantico course about 10 years ago. Senior Open District Championships in 1996 I think. I did take some pulls, so I have that going for me.

I think most of us have done it in a group, but that really doesn't count.

Personally, sub-6 keeps me pretty happy.
Cypress has come sorta close in April.

The almost 600 miles in 24 hours (would be 25mph average just like 100 / 4) is not too shabby either.

On my 52nd birthday I rode 100 miles (round trip) solo and unsupported in just under 5 hours clock time. I just barely made it with slightly less than two minutes to spare in perfect conditions (not too hot and almost no wind on a fairly flat course). I'm not sure I will ever be able to do it again. It took me a whole week to recover from the effort, but it was worth it. I don't think that I could ever get anywhere near a sub-4 hour solo/unsupported ride.

Does this count: Last years TDF entire Discovery team did a 134 mile stage with a TEAM average speed of something like 37 MPH!

It would depend on how you define decent. The pro peleton rides at such a rate of speed in stage races. Of course, these are the best riders in the world. Decent indeed.

I a recent blog entry I did a few calculations using Christian Valdevedle's power file from one of the early flat stages in the TdF. He finished in the pack with an average speed of 26mph but his average power was only 177 watts! Considering that it takes a solo rider roughly (and I mean very rougly) 200 watts to go 20mph on a flat road, the effect of being in the middle of the peleton is dramatic.

Sure you weren't looking at KPH? I very much doubt there has ever been a 125 mile plus stage of the TDF where the winning speed averaged 37mph. Fastest road stage of this year's tour was 47.2 kph, or 29.3 mph.

Fastest stage in TDF history was Zabriski's TT, 33.8 mph, but tha was a TT and only 19km.

I think what you're referring to is the 2005 TTT stage of the Tour and that was 35.5 mph for a little ove r40 miles.
