Tights + Trail Riding...
I'm having a little bit of an issue here... I want to ride in the cold; so far I've been happy ridding in 50-60 degree weather in shorts + a jersey, but it's getting to a point where the shorts are not cutting it. I've been thinking about tights, but there is some sort of stigma associated with them and mountain bikers...
ie:
So... Tights... Will I get laughed at for wearing them? Yes I have seen professionals in tights; no I am not a professional... Yes I do have sexy legs .

Most whom I ride with wear tights in the winter. Who should care what others think? There's no common 'stigma' that I am aware of.

If you're really concerned, wear your shorts over them. I also wear my knee/shins and you can't even see the tights. But I'm not too concerned about what others think, especially when the weather turns cold, especially up in good ol' Canada. Besides I'm more worried about what they all think of my pink ano I9's.

Meh. When it's cold I wear tights. Some of the guys I ride with wear knicker/tights; I'm not sure what they're called but they're tights that stop mid-calf. Just ride. If you want to feel less conscious, wear the tights under a pair of baggy shorts.

While I've got no problem wearing tights, I'm also a fan of leg warmers.

Cover your knees at less than 60 degrees.
60-40 I usually wear bib knickers or just throw on some knee warmers
40 or less, I use what kenhill has pictured

I come from a roadie background, so this is beyond a non-issue for me. tights/lycra/etc is a way of life. I also swim in masters swim meets and with a swim team. Speedos are a way of life. I have LONG since lost my pride.

Go post that in the roadie section and wait to see the responses. Some think that $100 for shorts means you are getting crap quality. They are nuts of course.

assos is supposed to be the shiznit. I would love a pair, but would not pay that. I ride in $40 cannondale shorts/chamois and ride 50 miles on a regular basis with no issues. I am going to get some PI Amfib tights for this winter. Those are about $100

If you really want to get all the phobics in an uproar, mention manpris.
Tights, layered stuff with baggies, knee warmers, leg warmers, XC ski pants, use whatever you need to keep you warm enough for whatever weather you're riding in. Figure anyone else out riding with you shouldn't care, and the opinion of those not out riding with you doesn't matter.
Functionality trumps nearly all.
