Where in West Seattle? I used to live over there, high speed was just over 50mph I believe on Genesee (down below the golf course). I was trying then, I'm faster now up hills and on the flats now, but probably wouldn't take the chance again to go that fast down hill.

54.5 mph down the Brockway Grade north of Lake Tahoe. I sooooo wanted to crack the speed limit!

I've cracked 50mph on mountain descents a few times. I don't like going that fast anymore and tend to limit myself to the low to mid 40's. Sprinting on the flats with no tailwind, I used to be able to get into the low 30's no problem. Haven't tried that for years because paces that I cannot maintain for significant distances are not really interesting to me -- probably because I'm getting slower rather than faster with time.
Top speed ever reached on my commuting bike (a touring bike) -- 48mph. Also on a mountain descent. Frankly it is easier to handle than my racing bike at high speeds, even if it is not as fast.

I'm less bothered by touching a maximum speed than sustaining a speed - I look at my computer when climbing much more often than when descending - I try to not let my speed drop below 20km/h.
Cycling down Epping Road the other day I had to keep up a good speed, as it's essentially a motorway. It's also downhill; I kept up a steady 55km/h; it was enough to broadly keep up with traffic and it was very wet - I had plenty left in the tank, but was worried about the conditions.
I suppose I've gone over 70km/h a few times, but I don't really look at the computer that often - especially when going fast! I'm a bit slower now that I've given up on gears; on a 42/17 I spin out at about 55km/h in any case.

Offroad - 56 MPH down the face of Camelback in Boise, ID.
Onroad - 54 MPH down Aiea Heights Drive in Oahu.
On flat ground...probably around 30. That's on my full suspension bike though.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
On a frighteningly steep descent... 90 kmh / 50 mph.
I seem to be too light to get the same kind of dh speed as bigger riders and 90 kmh is where my sense of self preservation kicks in.
On flat ground I have hit 55 kmh / 33 mph on my touring bike (she's light and fast) and next year I will be gunning for 60 kmh / 37 mph as this was a speed I was once able to hit and even exceed.
At 42 I'll be happy if I can hit 60 kmh in a sprint.
For that I need a different bike and it is presently getting built up in my shop.

46.6mph downhill, but that was when I was out of shape, and had a 52/14 so I couldnt pedal any faster. Fixie riding has helped that (and an 11-34 freewheel)

i jam my thumbs up and back into the tubes. this way i can point my fingers straight out in front to split the wind and attain an even more aero profile, and the usual fixed gear - zen - connectedness feeling through the drivetrain is multiplied ten fold because my thumbs become one with the tubing.

One time I hit about 400 MPH with my bike under me.
I was in a jet flying to Europe and my bike was down in the baggage compartment. Does that count?

aha, too bad I can't join this topspeed crowd.
I feel slow, cause I feel I am old...
the average speed is more of my concern, so I can estimate the time needed to go someplace.
(I am a freelancer, so I have to commute to new places everytime)
goodluck to you all

I hit just over 48mph on a decent a couple years ago on my road bike.
Fastest I've maintained on a flat road with no wind is 27-28mph but I cannot maintain that speed for very long...couple miles at best.

42mph on two different Morgan County steep downhills last summer on the same ride. A third nearby hill, Observatory Road, is equally steep and defeated me going up that day - had to walk the last bit of the steepest part. Won't be going down that one because at the bottom is a stop for a busy state highway crossing.

I've hit 55 mph (in 1987) and loved it. Have always wanted to go faster since. I figure I would be good for 70 before starting to chicken out.

my top speed is only 20 mph on my regular run and i don't need to jack it up more due to safety... biking for me is just recreational not into racing... so 20 mph would be enough for me...

50km/h on flat ground, 55km/h on a descent. There are no safe hills to to more than that around here.
