Redondo Beach PD Ticketing Cyclists
Last weekend I saw at least 3 cyclists pulled over by RBPD near the beach. Some of them looked not too happy, lol. Make sure if riding in that area to make a complete stop, look both directions and then proceed.

Yup when i started riding back in jan on my 2nd ride ever (going around PV up the switch backs) we were going up catalina and rolling slowly through stop signs and the cop was furious, you could tell he didn't want to have to be writing tickets but said people in the neighborhood were complaining.

I don't blow stops but i mean i roll through them on roads like catalina where its really really clear if a car is coming.

Different police will interpret when a stop is good enough differently. I've been told that stopping pedaling and slowing waaaay down is good, I've been told that I need to stop and put a foot down, and been told that stopping and trackstanding is good enough. In the end, if you don't come to a full stop with a foot down, you'll be at the mercy of the policeman who sees you (and most likely what kind of a day they are having.) Take your own chances. Just don't ***** about getting a ticket for blowing a stop sign. (No one here is, but I see it all the time)

If they're writing cyclists up for a violation of vehicle code 22450 for not putting a foot down that sounds incorrect. The law only says vehicle operators have to stop (as in complete cessation of forward movement), not that vehicle operators have to put a foot on the ground.

That wouldn't hold up in court. The law simply states a full and complete stop. Since cyclists adhere to the same laws as motorists, I would ask the cop why s/he doesn't stop drivers who don't put a foot on the ground. Cops can be wrong at times.

in my experience most cyclists barely even slow down at stops.....i dont think were talking about a trackstand vs a foot down here.....then again i did see a guy in a crappy little civic blow through a major light at about 50mph last night...no cops, but the new camera doo hickey nailed his *****!!!

I was followed by a RBPD cruiser through three stops signs on Catalina on Saturday. I didn't stop, but I slowed way down, stopped pedaling, and made sure the intersection was clear. Apparently he was cool with that.

I know stop means stop but I have never seen a cop give a ticket to a driver for stopping past the stop sign. It has been years since I took the driving test but from I remember you have to stop at the stop sign then you can creep foward after it is clear to look at traffic. I mean come on I really don't like having to swerve around a car that pops out and into traffic going 50 miles a hour. I know about every driver does it and as a cyclist you have to come to expect it but i have yet to see a driver get a ticket for it. Am I wrong here?

I just don’t see what’s so difficult about stopping. As others have stated, you really don’t need to come to a full complete stop (even though the legal definition says otherwise). My experience is that if you stop pedaling and slow to less than 2 mph, you’re good. I’ve done this many times with officers looking on and have never had any trouble. Not once.
It’s not hard for the police to find a cyclist blowing through a stop sign. I say more power to the Redondo PD.
