I have a 1994 GT Ricochet and I recently had it tuned up. I think it may need a few more things before I convert it to a rail trailer and get a new mountain bike. The brakes seem to be getting pretty hard and are probubly 10 years old, it also has the orginal chain and the grips are shot. My questions are what size chain do I need? Are some better than others? What kind of brake pads should I get? I want something that will improve stopping if possible. Also has anyone ever put regular grips on the GT bullhorn type bar?

A 7-8 speed chain will work...SRAM, Shimano, KMC, etc. Brake pads...a lot of people like the Kool Stop salmons...

Regular grips might work, probably not the lock on type, though...longer, thinner ones would be more likely to work.

Brake Pads

I notice I have seperate holders and pads. I pulled the pads out and they are Shimano M65/T's. Will any replacement pad work or do I have to use similar Shaimans?

Chains: pretty much all the same, but I prefer sram for the powerlink and because I seem to break shimano chains much more frequently.
Tubes: no difference, except in thickness. Thinner=more flat prone. You decide how thick you want. Or go tubeless...
Brake pads: I don't think the international standard for brake pad inserts has changed in the last 15 years, so you should be fine with buying some kool stop inserts.

How many miles on the bike? At this point replacing the chain will probably cause some serious issues due to cassette and chainring wear. Once you get past a certain point of chain 'stretch' everything starts to wear together, so when you put a new, un-'stretched' chain on nothing works. Chainsuck and ghost shifting abound. Tears flow.
anywho, ask the shop to check your chain wear. If it's past 75% (I can almost guarantee it is) then you need a new cassette as well, and maybe new chainrings. I know, sad.

Its 15 years old with countless miles on it. I have removed some links in the past so I may just keep what I have and just make sure its lubed well. I have been thinking about converting it to a single speed after I get a new bike anyway.

Does it have v brakes? Didn't think they were around back in '94...v brake inserts won't work with canti pad holders...
