Going back and forth from clipless to flats
My neighbor just gave me a bike and it has flats. It is a Jeep FS bike so it is nothing special but he gave it to me because he can't ride it and hated to see it sit. I figure I will use it to tool around the neigborhood and hit some of the easier local trails. I am just starting to get used to the clipless pedals on my GT though and wander if ridding the flat equipped bike will hinder my progress?

Yea I rode a next a few weeks ago and it felt horrible. I think gravel roads would be to rough for it and it was extreamly sloppy on the roads. The Jeep bike is not that bad, defintily not ready for down hill or freeriding but it should hold up to anything I will give it. I will be sticking to my GT for the more aggressive stuff and continue to shop for a 29er

I took the Jeep bike out for a ride the other day and here are some observations
The mechanical disk brakes are horrible. My 15 year old canti's stop better and arn't much louder.
I suck up half the travel of the front fork when I get on the bike.
It is lighter than I thought a FS at its price would be
With the rear spring adjusted pretty tight theres not much bobing but it dosent soak up bumps very well either.
All in all its not as bad as I thought but I'll stick with my GT on the tuff stuff. Its definitly worlds ahead of any Walmart bike I have seen but I still prefer my 15 year old GT

Ha, one of the huge bastketball players at school rides around campus on a jeep "full suspension" bike. Its funny because he is obviously too heavy for it so he just bobs up and down like a car with ****ty shocks

jokes aside......most of the times when our better halves come up with these kind of logics it is because they dont see the logic behind blowing hundreds and thousands of dollars for a bike. Its very similar to my trouble understanding why she needs about 30 pairs of shoes.
I have an shoe analogy that I share with my friends quite often. I have three pairs of shoes in my closet a $199 all leather Italian hiking/backpacking boots, a pair of trail running shoes and a $120 dress shoe. My wife has about 30 pairs of shoes; individually they dont cost very much but there they are. I find most of these shoes as useless wastage of money (except from those italian high heel shoes). and she can not figure out why I would spend $199 for a pair of shoes. She knows that I have been wearing them for about 5 years now. But, her point is you need update your drawer every season and every year. I stopped talking logic right there.
But, I convinced my wife about the my hobby. looked her at the eyes and told her that if you want to see your husband happy and safe "we" need to invest on quality gear. If I could swing it I would buy a Santa Cruz Blur LT and she would be totally cool with that. its about training our spouses and showing them the value of passion.
